Wednesday, March 28, 2007 · Page 12 Maplewood Tiger Tales BY NICOLE NANTAIS AND VICKI VAN GENT Although the senior basketball season has ended, the junior boys' basketball season has just begun! Their first tournament was on Monday, March 19 at Maplewood. Teams from Amherstburg P.S., Kingsville P.S. and Gosfield North P.S. participated in this event. The games were action-packed and a lot of fun. Thank you to Mr. Spagnulo for organizing the tournament. Thanks also go to all the volunteers, including students, parents and Maplewood staff, who offered their time to make this a success! There are three more tournaments in the season. Go Tigers! Students in Mr. Archer's grade 3 class have been creating acrostic poems. Here are a few for your reading pleasure: During the March Break, 20 of Cardinal Carter's senior social science students had the opportunity to experience the culture of Europe. Over the 12-day span the group visited three countries: France, Monaco and Italy. Many historical and cultural sites were explored along the way, including the Eiffel Tower, above, the Louvre Museum, the Colosseum, and the Vatican. After a week of rest and relaxation, staff and students returned, refreshed, and ready to work on March 19. This week proved to be nothing less than noteworthy! HNS celebrated the 2007 Jumpin' Read-A-Thon with a prize assembly March 21. Equipped with high-tech devices and accessories (including a spotlight), the school gymnasium was the centre for this spectacular celebration of school support and spirit. All in attendance were treated to a `rewind' of the actual Read-a-Thon day that took place earlier on in the month, when student pictures and video clips were shown. Finally, the grand total was to be unveiled students were given a fundraising goal of $15,000. Were the committed students of HNS able to achieve this goal? The audience awaited the results in utter suspense ... YES! Not only did the students of HNS reach the goal, they surpassed it, bringing in close to $16,500 in total pledges! Because of the outstanding efforts put forth by students in supporting this worthwhile event, the audience was treated to an outrageous display of predetermined incentives including ... an `Extreme' makeover for Mrs. Casalena, our HNS vice-principal; an encore `Rap' performance courtesy of Holy Name's own Father Larry (a.k.a Father Fifty Cent); mustache trimming and shaving services for Mr. Urban; a `cool' new `do for Mr. McLeod; a staff sumo wrestling challenge where Mr. Ryan and Mrs. Mulvey faced off; and our very own school principal, Mr. Lozinsky getting his `just desserts' as he was repeatedly pied in the face by the top ten student fundraisers. Congratulations to all students who participated in this fundraising event. Also on March 21, HNS was the host of the Holy Name Invitational Junior Boys' Basketball Tournament. Teams from W.J.
