Wednesday, February 14, 2007 · Page 8 Crowds descend on Festival of Ice BY ANDY COMBER Harrow's population exploded on Saturday, with over 1,000 people attending the 7th Annual Colio Estate Wines Festival of Ice. A non-stop stream of people descended on Colio winery to see ice, chocolate and wood carved into works of art and to taste some culinary treats. Ice sculpturing teams from Canada and the United States competed for cash prizes, creating icy works of art in the theme of "Wild Kingdom." This year, top honours went to an ice carving of a large butterfly, complete with 2-foot-long antennae, created by members of the Ice Club team from Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan Jeff Prather and Jeremy Carey, and their assistant Kevin Eckert. A number of different ice sculptures were done by members of the Ice Sculpturing Team of Eastern Michigan University, including an icy winged statue of Pegasus by William Rose, a giraffe by David Kurth and Emily Kleopfer, and a Coca Cola Polar Bear by Nick Bence and Jeff Kurth. Also from the U.S., Detroiters Brian Swift and Durjon Morris returned to create their own icy animal sculptures. Also returning this year, Harrow resident Andreas Erdmann, a chef by trade, created an impressive wall of ice carved with animals. Besides sweet ice-wine sampling for the adults, other main events included chocolate carving, woodcarving, and a dessert table complete with a milk chocolate fountain. Harrow woodcarver Paul Chittle demonstrated his handiwork, carving intricate details into wood at a demonstration table inside the winery.
