Feb. 8, 2007 at 87 yrs. of age. Taking her to rest eternally in heaven is her late husband Alfred (Fred) of Cottam whom she missed terribly since 1987. Dearest mother of Lorraine (Bob) Wanklin, Herman (Pat), Donald (Marcella), Gary (Bonnie) and Ronnie (Brenda). Mémé will be lovingly missed by 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Online condolences may be made at www.meladyfuneral.ca Fighting crime one toonie at a time Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers is once again coordinating its annual Toonie Mile Fundraiser. Several financial institutions have partnered with Crime Stoppers and have agreed to place toonie strips with each teller at each branch. Toonie strips are currently on display at branches of RBC Financial Group, National Bank Of Canada, TD Canada Trust, Caisses populaires de l'Ontario, Scotiabank and BMO Financial Group until the end of March. Crime Stoppers is encouraging the community to donate a toonie each time they visit their financial institution. Instead of putting empty wine, beer and spirit containers in the Blue Box for recycling, you can take them back to The Beer Store for a refund. Residents will receive a 10 cent refund on small coolers and beer and 20 cents for the larger wine and liquor bottles. The Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority applauds the deposit/refund program initiated by the provincial government for several reasons, according to General Manager Todd Pepper. "Glass has long been a money loser for the authority's recycling program. High freight costs, limited markets, and low to no revenues are just some of the problems the Authority faces," Pepper said in a press release. Recovery rates for LCBO bottles has hovered around 69 percent, meaning that 31 percent are ending up in the landfill. This does not include the portion of the eight million LCBO containers sold into the EssexWindsor market that are made from aluminum, plastic, or tetra pak. At the same time, the Beer Store boasts a return rate of approximately 98 percent. The deposit/refund program is expected to have a positive influence on our local recycling program, Pepper said.
