When Murray, Adam and I moved to the Cottam area 26 years ago, we were blessed to have moved into an area with good neighbours. One of those that lived right next door was Helen Homeniuk. Helen was a hard worker. She loved her flowers and garden, even at 90 years of age you would see her behind the rototiller. She lived in her house until she was 91 then went to reside at Southgate Retirement Home in Kingsville. Helen turned 100 on Tues. Feb. 6. Investigators at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago followed a group of 3,718 subjects age 65 or older for six years, recording their eating habits and periodically measuring overall cognitive ability through tests of memory and thinking speed. They found that compared to participants who ate less than one serving of collard greens or kale experienced a 35 to 40 percent slower rate of decline in cognitive function. Among those who ate more than two servings of vegetables a day, the older the individual, the greater was the cognitive slowdown. Researchers suggest that the vitamin E found in leafy green vegetables may help protect neurons from damage that can lead to dementia!
