Wednesday, February 7, 2007 · Page 26 Bantam A Essex Source for Sports The second round of the playdowns started when Southpoint came to Essex on Super Bowl Sunday. Southpoint got on the board very early and never looked back. There was bad karma from the start for the hometown boys, and nothing went their way all night. Bad bouncing pucks, lots of penalties, injuries, and missing guys were just some of the things that contributed to their awful luck. It was 4-0 after the first. Both goalies had a turn playing, and the team plugged along. The Ravens seemed to get a bit of their groove in the second and held Southpoint to only one goal but this was not their night and the game ended with a final score of 8-0. Hopefully all of the bad luck is done and the Ravens will make a come back, like they often do, ready for game two. The Essex Red Raider senior girls' volleyball team won the Raider Invitational tournament last weekend. The girls defeated Holy Names in the finals 25-22, 24-26 and 15-7. This is the first tournament victory for the team this year, but it is certainly not their first success. The senior girls' team is undefeated in league play with four matches left. This is quite an accomplishment considering this is the first year the Raiders have played in the AAA/AAAA division, and are playing with four grade 11s on the starting line up. The Raiders are working hard to keep a tight grip on first place going into playoffs. The last league games for the girls are listed below.
