The children were introduced to story of the the 'Gingerbread Man', which inspired many other interesting activities. The JK students particularly enjoyed decorating their very own gingerbread cookies. Mysteriously, their wonderful (and yummy!) creations disappeared, as in story of the the 'Gingerbread Man', and eager students went on a hunt throughout the school to find their gingerbread people. After some helpful hints from various classes in the school, their creations were finally found. Great job, JK's! Students in Grades 3CI, 3CO, and 3D participated in water safety training at the Essex YMCA. Through the 'Swim to Survive' program, Grade 3 students were taught three fundamental skills: treading water, swimming 50 meters, and rolling into deep water. The benefits of the program are numerous and the students thoroughly enjoyed demonstrating their new skills. What a great way to stay active and learn valuable water survival skills! In school news ... Holy Name Elementary will be kicking off its 2nd Annual Jump 'N Read-A-Thon on Feb. 8 at 2:30 p.m. Student Council will have the crowd jumping again in this year's assembly and will encourage the Hawks to get pledges and read. The annual Read-a-Thon is the school's main fundraiser for the year. Monies raised will help fund equipment, field trips and various classroom needs. The actual Read-a-Thon Day will be Friday, March 2. Holy Name Hawks will once again combine reading with physical fitness to promote the idea of keeping both the mind and body fit for life! Celebrity guest readers will be visiting the students including Mike and Lisa from AM800, Dave Hunter from 89X radio, and Jim Crichton, from Aanchorman Channel news. The school hopes to reach its goal of $15,000. Congratulations are also in order for those students who participated in the Knights of Columbus 'Substance Abuse Poster Contest'. Students were challenged to design posters dealing with the theme of substance abuse and to create innovative slogans to coincide with the images that each chose to present on their poster. Students whose posters were chosen among the best received certificates and medals in recognition of their achievements. Many other students also received certificates of participation.
