Wednesday, January 31, 2007 · Page 19 An unforgettable 1967 Triumph GT6 Kathy Vance of Toronto still remembers the sports car she purchased in Ottawa some 30 years ago. Here is the story in her own words: "I was in my twenties, it was the 1970s, and together I, my Irish setter, and this car made it through a personal relationship ending to a new beginning. When I bought this car I didn't know who I was and who I should be involved with, and by the time I sold this car I was on the road to a solid life. "My friend John Hallum brought me to his New Edinburgh garage in Ottawa, where he was storing an old car for a friend of a friend, in the hopes that maybe I'd buy this old car that had no tires, wouldn't start, had rusted, and was taking up space. "The open door cast the only light on this forgotten beauty. I lost my heart and I bought it, and in that instant my friends and family thought I had lost my mind. "Kevin McNevin became my friend and taught me how to balance the Triumph's dual carburetors and how to pop rivet a new floor so my feet would stay dry when it rained. I was so focused on getting it started and keeping it going that my friend Isamu Ono taught me the most important life lesson: that brakes and stopping come first. "A full racing harness to strap me in relaxed my mother's worries marginal- ly as I, the setter, and the Triumph ranged in search of adventure. We drove all along the Eastern seaboard, throughout Québec, Gaspé, and camping in P.E.I. Thrilled by the power, I learned to `listen' to the road and the engine and to appreciate the teamwork with guys who were just as crazy about this car as I was. "Known affectionately by some as my future coffin on wheels, the car, by sitting so close to the road, had a reputation for possibly bursting into flames when hitting a bump or dip in the road, thus igniting the gas tank. "Spinning around was also a problem with this big-engine scooter. One fine autumn day driving westbound on the Ottawa River Parkway, the car held the tight curve until it did a 360-degree turn, then just kept completing the curve. With reflexes and luck, I finally decided to sell it after several exhilarating years of driving, caring, and sharing. "Isamu knew a fellow mechanic who was looking for a fast car. It was hard for us to get it across to this mechanic, who wanted the car, that it was tricky keeping it on the road. "He bought it. Isamu told me three months later the car was a lawn ornament in his co-worker's back yard. It had been his folly as it had been mine. Now when of the first period the score was 2-1 in the Ravens favour. The second period started much the same as the first as the pattern repeated itself. Amherstburg scored halfway through the period to tie up the game but only for a minute. Lyle Little gave us the lead again by a quick goal assisted by Jessy Amyotte. The last 2 1/2 minutes of this period ended with a slam with Amherstburg tying up the der. Picking up assists on the goal were Darrin and Alec. Late in the period Scott let go a menacing shot from the point at the opposing goalie but play was whistled down when a Southpoint defenceman knocked the puck out of the air with a high stick. I think of balancing carbs, it's a whole other thing." Do you have any car stories or photos to share with our readers? Send your e-mails to bill@carstory.com. Peewee Interlock Essex Video & PC Connection SX Video and PC Connection notched their second playoff victory on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they shut out Southpoint #10 by a score of 5-0. The two teams started off playing evenly matched hockey. Essex looked slightly more agile against the larger Southpoint team and play went back and forth for much of the period. Essex took a penalty less than three minutes into the period but despite being down a player, played like the sides were even. Mario put Essex on the scoreboard at the 5:32 mark of the period when he scored unassisted. The second saw Essex control more of the play. Only 35 seconds into the period Chase grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and used his speed to skate past the Southpoint offence and coming on the left side ripped one past the crouching Southpoint netminder into the upper right hand corner. Less than two minutes later and with the Southpoint squad sitting out a penalty, Darrin was parked outside the right side of the goalie crease. Josh made a nice pass to Darrin who picked his spot and beat the goalie to the glove side. Also assisting on the goal was Mario. Essex were not showing they had more legs than the visitors and were controlling the puck most of the time. A minute later Essex put the score at 4-0. This time Jake took a pass from Anthony and made a shot that was too hot for the goalie to handle. Bantam A Essex Source for Sports Tuesday night game was the third game in the Essex Bantam A series against Amherstburg in Amherst burg. We knew going in it could be anybody's game and that proved to be true for the entire game. It wasn't until halfway through the first period before there was a score on He got his glove in front of the puck but it bounced over the glove and had enough momentum to cross the goal line. The period would end with Essex up by four. The Essex squad found themselve with the man disadvantage in the early part of the board. It was Amherstburg to score first but within a minute Essex would tie it up by Tony Spidalieri putting it in the net assisted by an awesome play by Chad Hedrick. It was only minutes later when Tony Spidalieri found the net assisted again by Chad Hedrick. At the end the third period and though a man short controlled the play for much of the two minutes. With 4:27 left in the period Anthony was to score the final goal of the game when he took a pass just outside of the goal crease and his well placed shot beat the netmin- game again for a 3-3 score. But in no way was Tony Spidalieri allowing the period to end in a tie so he put the puck in on a powerplay assisted by Alex Thomson with only 1 1/2 minutes left on the clock to give us a goal lead of 4-3. The ice was ripped up after two periods of hard hitting and back and forth hockey. Both teams were ready for a rest. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Essex put in a well rounded effort with seven of the 10 skaters picking up points on the day and the fine play of Braydon in net along with solid play from the four defencemen helped earn Braydon his second shut out of the young playoffs.
