Students have recently begun a new unit in Mathematics focusing on 2-D shapes and 3-D solids. After discussing some new terms and vocabulary, students were ready to experiment with the new 3-D solids that they had learned so much about. The Grade 1's worked together, in groups, to create `tall towers' using cylinders, cubes, cones, rectangular prisms, and spheres all of varying sizes. Students were encouraged to think about which solids were best suited for the bottom or `base' of their tower and which would work best for the top. Students were quick to discover that beginning their structure with a cone or a sphere at the base would be quite difficult and not such a great choice. After recording how many of each type of solid was used in their towers, students furthered their understanding of this topic by comparing the towers that their own group constructed with others, noting important differences, such as the total number of solids used, the types of solids used, the size of solids used, and the overall height of each tower. It seems as though there may be some future engineers and architects roaming the halls of Holy Name Elementary! Job well done, Grade 1L/M!
