As the regular season winds down and with only a few points separating first from last place every game is becoming more important heading into playdowns. From the opening faceoff the Ravens showed their desire to control this game. Their tenacious forechecking was quickly rewarded as Awstin Pettit opened the scoring with assists going to Matt McGuire and Tony Spidalieri. The Ravens continued their relentless forechecking and defense allowing Riverside very little in the way of offensive chances until the second period but goaltender Wes Strain was equal to the challenge. The teams traded scoring chances as the game opened up. Ryan Morris controlled the puck in the midst of an Essex line change and fought off the Riverside defenders until help from Ty Queen and Lyle Little arrived with Lyle banging home the cross ice pass to restore the lead. A few minutes later Alex Thompson took a pass from Kyle Zelko and took a long shot which the Riverside goalie kicked out but the rebound came directly back to Alex who made no mistake blasting a rocket into the top corner for a 3-1 lead. Late period penalties gave the Rangers a long five on three powerplay and a chance to get back into the game. Excellent goaltending and smart defense blanked the Ranger powerplay to hold the lead. The third period brought good, smart hockey, the dominant forechecking of Essex created yet another goal, this time on a blast from Travis Hendricks with assists going to Chad Hendrick and Matt ending all McGuire Riverside hopes of a comeback. Final score Essex 4, Riverside 1. The final three games of regular season came down to bittersweet victory for the Essex Ravens Bantam A Hockey Club. Going into Friday's game against the Tecumseh Eagles, the standings held Essex at fourth place overall. A 3-2 victory put the spotlight on Ty Queen and Tony Spidalieri with honourable mentions to Blain Little, Alex Thompson, Lyle Little, Colin Delaet and Kyle Zelko for the ever valued assists. Rock solid goaltending compliments of Evan Howson. Special guest star AP Matt McGuire, always nice to see Matt. Eddie Sauve's triumphant return saw a short life with another injury and scare. Eddie's got heart and we need him back soon. Take care Eddie. Saturday's tie against the formidable Rink Rats of Belle River left Essex in a not too shabby tie for second place overall in the Bluewater League. Thanks to quick handed goaltending of Weslie Strain and self sacrifice of Blain Little who left hurt with an injured right shoulder. Assists provided by hard shooting team captain Alex Thompson and defenseman Tyler Raymont and assistant captain Jessy Amyotte led to three goals against scored by Tony Spidalieri, Travis Henricks and speed man Ty Queen. Final outcome 3-3. Sunday's low penalty win against Riverside Rangers saw Evan Howson shine brightly just when we needed him to. Kyle Zelko's right collarbone decided it had enough in the first period and Kyle went with it, hope you're O.K. and back with us soon Kyle. This final regular season victory for Essex with a 5-1 win over Riverside placed the Ravens in an impressive three way tie for first place in the Bluewater League against Belle River and Windsor Junior Spitfires. Two goals and one assist credited to Ty Queen and one goal each for Tony Spidalieri, Tyler Raymont and Jessy Amyotte. Three impressive assists by Ryan Morris, two each by Lyle Little, Alex Thompson and Colin Delaet. Special guests were AP players Awstin Pettit and Andrew Wellwood. Thanks for the support guys. With thanks to team sponsor Essex Source For Sports, Essex Ravens Bantam A is headed into playdowns in pretty great shape. Good luck Essex. Pre game thoughts and heartfelt prayers went out Sunday to Team Manager and Essex Minor Hockey Association President Michele Bradt at the sudden and tragic loss of husband and friend Keith Bradt. Midget Minor CCD Short staffed Ravens fall 2-1 On Friday night the Ravens travelled down the 401 for a match up with the Chatham Jr. Maroons. The Ravens started off well in the first period, Kevin Boggs took a shot from the blueline and Danny Vivier banked in the rebound past the Chatham netminder. Essex would end the first period with a 1-0 lead. The second period would be a different story as the Ravens got into some questionable penalty problems. On a two man advantage the Jr. Maroons would even the score up at one. Danny Vivier would get a breakaway chance short handed. However the Maroons' goaltender would make the save. With penalty calls and injuries to Kevin Boggs and Quinton Rossini, the Ravens played the majority of the second period with three players on the bench. In the third period with five minutes remaining on another powerplay the Maroons would capitalize which would be enough as the Ravens fell 2-1. Hard work tops LaSalle Saturday night with injuries to Kevin Boggs, Tyler Reeb and Quinton Rossini, they finished off the Bluewater regular season at the Essex Arena against the LaSalle Sabres. During the first period the Ravens and Sabres both played a strong period. LaSalle came out on top after one scoring a goal with 2:20 remaining in the first. As for the second period the majority of it was dominated by the Ravens chance after chance either missing the net or stopped by the LaSalle goaltender. The Ravens finally broke through with 5:38 remaining in the period, Robert Battersby sent the puck out front and after a scramble in front, Andrew Kozak would put it in. The score would be 1-1 after two periods. Early in the third period the Ravens got into some penalty trouble and 33 seconds into the period LaSalle capitalized on a power play to take a 2-1 lead. The Ravens would not give up and continued their hard work and it paid off with 4:00 minutes remaining. Ben Bates tied the game off a rebound with Derek Vivier and Jesse Breault assisting. Essex kept coming. Eighteen seconds later the Ravens would capitalize on another rebound as Mitch Passa put the puck in the open side with Andrew Kozak assisting on the goal. The Ravens controlled the play for the remainder of the game for a big 3-2 victory. Both Matt Lachine (in Chatham) and Amanda Wigfield (vs LaSalle) played strong in net for Essex. The Ravens finished the Bluewater regular season with 10 wins 10 losses and four ties. Keep up the hard work in playdowns.
