Wednesday, January 17, 2007 · Page 12 Red Raider News BY KYLE WALKER SPECIAL TO THE FREE PRESS After a two-week holiday, staff and students returned to EDHS on Jan. 8, with only a few weeks left of the semester. Starting back up in the New Year, the Ripper Raiders are working out again to lose those extra pounds put on over the holidays. Mr. Loncke and Ms. Alexander are reminding students of the "To Kill a Mockingbird" play during the Stratford Festival in May. The trip costs $75, including ticket and transportation. On Jan. 11, the first Raider DEAR Day of the year took place. Staff and students read during period two of the day. The boys' hockey team played Herman on Jan. 8 and won 5-2. On Jan. 9, the boys played Riverside and won 6-2 giving them backto-back wins. On Jan. 10, the boys' curling team stepped up to the A Division for the first time. Coming up short against the more experienced Holy Names, the Raiders lost the game 8-3. On Jan. 12, the school held a Jersey Day to give the staff and students a chance to show off jerseys from their favourite sports' teams. The cash will go toward the school's Jump Start Breakfast program, which provides students in Grades 3 to 5 and Special Education classes with healthy snacks every day. SUN PARLOR JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS Paige and Thomas, students in Mrs. Tetrault's JK class, know it's all about teamwork...even at the computer! school's badminton teams. Try-outs are expected to start soon. On Jan. 11, the senior boys' basketball team played Villanova and played a strong game. After the first half, the Raiders were ahead with a 41-20 lead. In the end, the Raiders won with a score of 50-39. Jeremy Butler led the scoring for the team with 17 points. The junior boys' basketball team achieved their first league victory, defeating Villanova on Jan. 11. The final score was 43-25. The senior girls' volleyball team defeated Villanova on Jan. 11 with set scores of 27-25, 25-17, 25-17. The junior girls' volleyball team also played Villanova on Jan. 11. The girls managed to win the first and second match but were unable to win the third. Game scores were 25-14, 22-15, 20-25. Mrs. Ouellette and Mrs. Del Col are in the process of preparing for this years' fashion show. On Jan. 15, Mrs. Lindsay took the winning students from the can drive to the Family Fun Centre in Windsor to play laser tag. The winning classes were Mr. McKinley's English class, Ms. Gomes' English class and Mrs. Lindsay's Leadership class. Holy Name Hawk Happenings Welcome back, Hawks! After a very busy and funfilled month of December, staff and students were able to let loose, relax and enjoy some quality family time over the holiday break. After two wonderful weeks, schools were up and running again on Jan. 8. Everyone seemed to start the new year off right as both staff and students fell right back into usual routines. Student athletes of all ages were out in full force this week as tryouts began for the various basketball teams that will represent our school for this season. Teacher coaches were impressed at the outstanding number of interested participants, both boys and girls. What a wonderful show of school spirit and involvement! Teams have been chosen and games will soon begin. Stay tuned for upcoming results and more basketball news! On Jan. 10, students in Grade 6MAS and 6MAR were treated to an interesting presentation in support of their science curriculum and current unit of study on Paul Mr. electricity. Market, an electrician working in the automotive industry, took time from his busy schedule to visit the Grade 6's and speak to them regarding various aspects of his career. In his presentation, Mr. Market included safety information and educational requirements and upgrades necessary in this profession. Students had the opportuni- ty to gain valuable information regarding this topic of study and insight into a career in this field. The Grade 6 students and their teachers would like to extend their thanks to Mr. Market for joining them and further educating them on the topic of electricity. Also this week, students in Grade 6MAS have been busy collecting milk order for this term. Milk orders were due this week. The distribution of milk will begin next week. Holy Name Elementary is pleased to be able to present students with the option and the opportunity to have such a nutritious and delicious drink on a daily basis.
