Wednesday, November 8, 2006 · Page 26 Bantam A Essex Source for Sports Friday our boys met with Southpoint in Essex. AP player Matthew McGuire played well and started the scoring for Essex. The Ravens never looked back. There were many penalties for both sides. Ty Queen led the team with two goals and two assists, giving the Ravens an 8-5 victory. Other goal scorers were Tony Spidalieri, Colin Delaet, and Ed Sauve. Captain Alex Thompson managed to get 34 minutes in penalties and Jessy Amyotte threw an impressive body slam and two nice right jabs. All this action made for an entertaining game. Saturday's game, however, is better forgotten. Chatham handed Essex a 10-3 beating. Ouch! Raven goal scorers were Ty Queen, Travis Henricks and Tony Spidalieri. The only excitement this game was Queeny going to the wrong arena. Bantam AE Facca Construction The boys met the Riverside Rangers again this weekend Saturday night at Essex Arena, and the result was much like their last meeting. Riverside took the lead early and by the end of the first period it was 3-0. Although there was some strong defensive play, great penalty killing, and aggressive play, the boys just couldn't put the puck in the net. Late in the second period Matthew McGuire scored an unassisted goal which proved to be the only goal for the Ravens for the night. Final score in the game 8-1 Rangers. On Saturday the Ravens played their only game of the weekend against the Chatham Maroons. After a very disappointing two games against Belle River last weekend, the Ravens were hungry for a win. The first period was filled with penalties, but thanks to great penalty killing and goaltending from Amanda Wigfield, the Ravens were able to hold the Maroons powerplay from scoring and both teams were held to no goals. In the second period the Ravens started capitalizing on their chances and Andrew Kozak would start off the scoring after receiving a centering pass and hurrying it top corner. But the Maroons came right back to tie it up at one with a point shot on the power play. Then Spencer McDowell took the puck down the right wing and fired a crisp pass onto the stick of Andrew Kozak to net his second of the game. Again, the Maroons would come right back with less than two minutes in the period and tie the game at two. The netminders would split the game and Matt Lachine would take over in the third. The Ravens were hungry for the win and needed a boards, and then carried the puck into Eagle territory. Well-grouped lines with Armstrong, Lee and Spitse had their chances to score and finally proved that our opponents' goalies are human and can be scored upon. Great teamwork resulted in a goal for Essex, as Lee assisted on a goal by Armstrong, giving Essex first blood. Our big boys on defense toned their aggressive play down a notch helping the Raven lines overcome the visits to the Midget Minor CCD Atom AE Ram Contract Carriers Thursday night we had a gut wrenching game against Tecumseh. There was nothing our Ravens could do to shut down this A division team. Sunday proved to our Ravens though that playing against teams in our AE division, they can compete just like the coaches say they can. Riverside came to Essex for our second meeting with them. Knowing that Riverside beat them before, Essex knew they had to play hard and stay strong and that is just what they did. The first period was very exciting, awesome defensive plays and good goaltending ended this period with no score for either team. Not long into the second period, Tyler St. Pierre accepted a nice pass from Zack Prentice and pumped one into the net. Riverside answered back and got a goal on us, but all that did was get the team moving faster. Tyler delivered a pass to Gerard Busko who found the net giving us a 2-1 lead. But that wasn't all. Carder Sherk ploughed through their defense and gave us goal #3. Clay Kraynack and Luke Tremblay had no problems shutting down Riverside in their attempts. Zack, Tyler and Gerard decided that just wasn't enough. Tyler passed the puck to Busko who handed it over to Zack to lay it on their goalie again, and one more time from Tyler to Zack finishing the game with a win 5-1. Way to go Ravens. This is a fabulous start to a busy week. We will be travelling to Mooretown for a tournament, starting Thursday. Hopefully this was the start of our winning streak, since we have proven to ourselves that we can do it. Atom A Forest Machine The Atom A team extended their winning streak to five. Friday night the boys hosted Tecumseh. The first goal came in the second period when William uerch passed the puck to eff Miller on the point, ho fired a shot that was ipped in by Jordan Hooker. fter Tecumseh tied the ame in the third Mitch uddy set up Mitch Salter or our second goal. Jonah uerth added two more in he third period. Excellent efensive play by Sean antarossa, Derek Morris, .J. Market and Dave tafford protected the 4-3 ictory. Saturday, Nov. 4 the avens travelled to Belle iver. Jonah Fuerth contined his scoring streak by putting Essex on the board with the first goal. Great forechecking by Brett Rickeard and Gerard Busko kept the pressure on Belle River. The winning goal came from the kid line of Dillon Jarvis, Dalton Langlois and Adam Zanier when Dillon Jarvis retrieved his own rebound to put it past the Belle River goalie. The goaltending of Kyle Hill and Josh Myers this weekend was some of the best we have seen from this pair. What a great streak to carry to the Mooretown tournament. Great job boys! Keep up the good work. Special thanks to our coaching staff and our sponsor Forest Machine. solid period from the whole team and that's just what they got. At 9:50 in the third period who else but Andrew Kozak would walk out of the corner and slide a shot through the five-hole to complete the natural hattrick. The Maroons were coming hard looking for a goal, but Derek Vivier had the Maroons scared to cross the Ravens' blueline with his great physical play and huge body checks. The Ravens were up 3-2 and were looking for some insurance. Then Quinton Rossini grabbed the puck behind the net, walked out and scored on a tricky backhander. Minutes later, Quinton Rossini would have the fans out of their seats as he came down the left wing and sniped a shot top corner. Thanks to good goaltending by both netminders, solid defence, and scoring from Kozy and Quinton, the Ravens would end their losing skid and capture a 5-2 victory. A special thanks to Awstin Pettit and his great play including two big assists, for filling in for injured Jesse Breault and Kevin Boggs, as well as our sponsor Mr. Merryfield for the team pizza party after the game. PARKS AND RECREATION Pee Wee A Tim Hortons On Friday, Nov. 3 we entertained the Eagles from Tecumseh. The Ravens wanted revenge from the last time we played, so playing at home with the crowd behind Essex, we hoped for points in the win column. We opened the first period shorthanded as we took some early penalties. Our defensive lines played well as we regrouped behind the net many times, trying to end our penalty woes. As the play continued, our breakouts were well executed; our forwards positioned themselves along the ADULT SOCIAL SPORTS The Essex Recreation Complex Drop in Fee is only $4.00 per visit!!! With our smart hockey tactics, Tecumseh seemed to be overwhelmed by our play, resulting in penalties by the Eagles. The first period ended Essex 1, Tecumseh 1. The second period had different results but Brady Heil keep the Ravens close in scoring distance. Great hustle by forwards, Carswell, Spidalieri and Bellaire showed their teammates that extra effort could pay off as they came close to scoring. The domination of the Ravens' play in the first lacked potential halfway through the second as we were sidelined by bad penalties, giving the Eagles a chance to take the lead. The third opened with more scoring by Tecumseh, but as the Ravens regrouped, Acchione and Bellaire showed their style of play as the "tic tac toe" passes worked in our favour, keeping the Tecumseh netminder busy making many saves.
