Wednesday, October 25, 2006 · Page 6 Essex Auto Wreckers forced to wait on decision to store vehicles BY DANIEL SCHWAB A decision to allow a local auto recycling yard to temporarily store vehicles on a Pinkerton Sideroad property was deferred by Essex town council Oct. 16, pending an assessment by the Ministry of the Environment. For the past few months, vehicles awaiting transfer to the yard have been stored at the site by Essex Auto Wreckers owner Randy Ingratta. He recently requested a temporary use by-law from council to allow the vehicles to remain on the property for one year. It is Ingratta's intention to purchase a larger property for his business, which currently operates on Gordon Avenue. Ingratta said the new site would be used solely as a transfer point and the vehicles would remain there until they were ready to be dismantled and sold. Ward 2 councillor Richard Meloche said there was "definitely an environmental issue" surrounding the proposal, adding that fluids from the vehicles have the potential to leak into nearby ditches and into neighbouring residents' well-water. Robert Loeffen, who owns property across from the proposed site, said any potential health hazards caused by the storage of vehicles will directly affect his family. "I don't want my children playing and catching frogs in ditches contaminated with automotive fluids," he said. Ward 3 councillor Bill Caixeiro said the business should've stopped accumulating vehicles, which has caused an overflow at the Gordon Avenue business and forced its owners to look elsewhere for storage. Prior to the meeting, Sue Arnold, manager of Country Meadows Cemetery and Monuments, sent a letter to Mayor Ron Essex McDermott and all councillors with an objection to the proposal. The cemetery, located on Concession 14 near the proposed site, would not benefit from the temporary use bylaw if passed, Arnold said in the letter. "We feel it will have a huge detrimental effect upon the existing land uses in the area and particularly to the picturesque country setting that was chosen for this cemetery," she said. Ward 1 councillor Randy Voakes applauded Ingratta for "accommodating the and addressed town," protests to the proposed bylaw by adding that no matter where the vehicles are stored, there will be complaints from neighbours. Debate scheduled CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 McDermott said he will tell voters during the debate that if he is elected, they will see a continuation of many projects already in progress, including the 10year plan to improve local roads and the completion of a new Essex arena. Essex mayoral candidate Larry Snively couldn't be reached for comment.
