· Wednesday, October 25, 2006 · Page 30 Atom A Forest Machine CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27 Speed and hard work throughout the second period created no score on the board but it frustrated Windsor as Essex had the answer for all their efforts. The third period started out with some questionable officiating but the Essex penalty killers responded. Adam Zanier stole the puck from a Windsor defenceman and went down one-on-one with the goalie. Zanier deked the goalie and lifted the puck over the goalie's blocker for a shorthanded goal and a 2-0 lead. As the period developed, the boys were more determined to finish what they had started and get the win. Windsor mounted a final attack on the power play but it was stifled by the glove hand of Myers. When Windsor pulled their goalie in favor of another forward, Jonah Fuerth was able to convert a pass from Wuerch into the empty net goal for a 3-0 lead. The only thing left was for the team to preserve the shut-out, and they did by forcing the play and even adding another goal with only 1.2 seconds on the clock. Huddy slipped a Fuerth pass into the net for the final goal. Final score was 4-0 for Essex. The victory came on the birthday of coach Dave Morris. It's ironic that the score was 4-0 as Dave is now also the big "4-0". Coach Dave was overheard saying he "got a very nice gift". Keep it going boys. Novice A Drs Hager/Kniaziew The Essex Ravens Novice team has started to develop and had a lot of smiles coming from this weekend's games. This team started the season with some losses that were attributed to the adjustment from house league hockey to travel hockey. In each game the team has improved and the coaching staff is anxious to see how much further the members of this team can develop. Our last weekend of games proved what the coaching staff knew all along that "hard work" will bring the results that we are all looking for. The members of this team are: Adam Amicarelli, Josh Scratch, Josh Amyotte, Johnathon Chittle, Carly Davidson, Dylan Dent, Jared Fuerth, Jacob Gagnon, Brendan Jones, Luke Mahon, Jake Maisonneuve, Nash Prieur, Grant Quinlan, Brady Rickeard, Brett Schmidt and Jake Watters. On Saturday evening the Ravens went into Amherstburg with a new attitude. We were a little flatfooted to start but eventually came to life. Amherstburg had built a 30 lead by the middle of the second period but we were not ready to quit. Essex came storming back on a nice goal from Dylan Dent as he broke into the zone around one defenceman and shot the puck into the corner of the net. This was quickly followed by Jared Fuerth on a long shot that eluded the Amherstburg goalie. Then, it was Brady Rickeard who came into the Amherstburg zone and was covered by the defence but let loose a shot that was screened by the Amherstburg defence and the goalie could not see it until it was behind him. The score at the end of the second period was 3-3. The third period had some end-to-end action but neither team could get the go ahead goal. The final score was 3-3. On Sunday the team travelled to Tecumseh for an exhibition game. Tecumseh had won a 3-1 contest just two weeks prior to this match. This game was our best effort this season. The Tecumseh team came out and put two goals on the board early to hold a 2-0 lead. The Ravens just kept to the plan of working hard and pressing the Tecumseh players. Jake Maisonneuve took a pass from Jake Watters to streak in, scoring on a break away to make the score 2-1 for Tecumseh. That is the way the second period ended. The third period started and the team refused to slow down. Just into the period, Brett Schmidt scored on a rebound from Dylan Dent to tie the game at two. Then Jared Fuerth converted a pass from Brady Rickeard and the Ravens had their first lead of the season. It was a short time later that Tecumseh scored to tie the game and it ended 3-3. The team worked very hard and each team player is developing with every practice and game. The goaltending team of Josh Scratch and Adam Amicarelli are playing very well and a win is certainly in the near future. The team will travel to St. Thomas this weekend for a tournament.
