Wednesday, October 25, 2006 · Page 21 Local beauty shop celebrates 50 years of business BY DANIEL SCHWAB For 50 years, Essex residents looking for a new hairdo have been making the trip to Centre Street. The tiny building began as Henderson's Hairdressing Shop, built by owner Bob Henderson when he moved the business from Talbot Street in 1956. Louise Dobson-Montgomery, a former hairdresser from those early days, was just finishing her threeyear apprenticeship when the new beauty shop was constructed and officially opened on her birthday. In those days the business was very different, DobsonMontgomery says. She remembers the staff of three hairdressers were required to wear head-to-toe white uniforms with white shoes. She now lives near Kingsville, but boarded in Essex and Woodslee while working at Henderson's for 11 years. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the building, Dobson-Montgomery recently brought an old photo of the original staff to the beauty shop, which was bought by Wayne Mayhew and Judy Finnerty in 1973 and became The Hourglass Hairstyles and Cosmetic Salon. Mayhew, who currently works with a staff of four, said a lot has changed since he took over the business. "It's about the same size as it's always been but we went through a few renovations," he said. "It's one of the oldest beauty shops in the county and one of the older businesses in Essex ... The town's been good to us. It becomes a family business because you get to know people well ... it keeps us here." Finnerty added that when the pair began the business, there was only one other beauty shop in town. "There's a lot more competition now," she said. Mayhew said as many as 200 customers stop by every week. He said after 36 years in the business, he will probably retire soon.
