Wednesday, October 25, 2006 · Page 19 Holy Name kicks off walk-a-thon fundraiser The Holy Name Student Council kicked off the walk-a-thon school's fundraiser Oct. 17 with much enthusiasm and lots of movement! Students prepared a short, energetic presentation to the tune, "I Would Walk 500 Miles," and added their own twist by promising to "walk for Holy Name." The Parent Council decided to try a different approach to fundraising this year in lieu of selling chocolate bars. The idea of a walk-a-thon was selected as a means of raising much needed funds. Monies raised will go DEA63106-6.75x135L-187 towards the purchase of equipment, agendas for next year, and classroom necessities. Parent Council member Lucy Spidalieri was present at the assembly and encouraged the students to do their best and make this fundraiser the "best walk-a-thon." Students have received their pledge forms, which should be returned to the school by Monday, Oct. 23. The school-wide walk-athon will be held Friday, Oct. 27. In Mission Club news ... It all began four short years ago with the love and generosity of the Holy Name School community. The HNS Mission Club chose to direct its attention to and 10/23/06 12:53 PM about 1 teach the school Page `Maria', a child from India, who was sponsored by HNS through Christian Child Care International. Each year, the Mission Club has developed new initiatives to motivate students at our school and encourage continued involvement and support for Maria. This year, with the support of the Essex of Columbus Knights Council 3305 and Essex Home Hardware, the Mission Club at HNS will be selling tickets that will be included in a raffle for a chance to win one of four $50 shopping sprees. Each student has been asked to donate $1, which will earn them three tickets to be included in the draw. All proceeds from this initiative will benefit Maria. In classroom news, the students in JKM and JKB were very busy `budding chefs' last week. In keeping with the spirit of the fall season, the JK's crafted a wonderful applesauce. Students enjoyed the experience of cooking, smelling and, best of all, tasting their creation. A big `thank you' goes out to Mrs. Moore who helped out in JKM with this activity. The goal scorers were Lindsay Goodman and Olivia Boka. Many thanks to our soccer coaches this year, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Sadler, Mrs. St. Pierre, Mrs. Robinet and Mrs. Mackay. The cross country team members did an awesome job at the regional meet. Each member should be proud of their accomplishments. Amanda Gemmell placed first in her division and the novice boys finished second in overall scoring. To celebrate fire prevention week, we had a firedrill. The younger students had a presentation from the Kingsville firefighters. We all learned a lot and, as always, hope we will never have to use that knowledge in a real situation. Our student parliament has been selected. Eight students ran for Prime Minister and 13 for student council. Our student Prime Minister is Amanda Gemmell and the executive council consists of Paul O'Brien, Faith Porter, Becky Porter and Ashley Mayea.
