For the next three months, students will be asked to sell tickets to help raise funds for new computers and equipment for the school. A total of $47,500 in prizes will be given away. Principal Terry Lyons said he hopes the students can exceed last year's total of selling 1,289 tickets. FITNESS FUN The Daily Physical Activity program is in full swing at Sun Parlor. The activities include jumping jacks, walking and touching every table and chair, and passing Franklin down the line (over you head, then back under between your legs). The activities are designed to get students moving to develop cardiovascular fitness in the classroom in addition to regular gym time. EDHS News BY KYLE WALKER SPECIAL TO THE FREE PRESS The school's senior girls' basketball team defeated St. Joseph with a 55-31 victory Oct. 3. The team has a record of one win and two losses so far this season. The junior girls' basketball team also played Oct. 3 and defeated St. Joseph with a 48-9 victory. The junior girls are currently undefeated and have three victories this season. On Oct. 5, the Ontario University Registrars Association visited EDHS for University Information Day. Graduating students were given information on programs available at colleges and universities so that they can start planning. The school held a bake sale outside the cafeteria Oct. 5 and 6 to raise money for general school needs. On Oct. 5 the school held auditions for this year's talent show. Some acts included dance routines, a couple of bands and a fencing duo. The talent show will be held Oct. 19 for the student body. Raider wear is back. Items for sale include sweaters, pants and T-shirts. Sales started Oct. 6 and end Oct. 13. Items will be for sale outside the cafeteria during lunch each day. New activities this year include a school rock band, a biology trip to Sea Camp at the Florida Keys and a stock market club. On Oct. 14 the Essex Athletic Association is holding a yard sale to help raise money for the athletic programs at the school. If you would like to get rid of some of the old stuff in your garage, closets or attic, contact Mr. Amicarelli or Mr. Dunn at 776-7344. Pick-ups are available. The yard sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a barbecue and Raider clothing will be on sale. The Red Raider Raffle is back. Over $47,000 in cash prizes is available to be won. The Grade 12 creative writing class is publishing a newsletter that will cover several topics including the student parking lot issue, the Halloween dance Oct. 27 and why kids can't eat lunch in the halls anymore. Holy Name Hawk Happenings Staff and students were visited by various members the Essex Fire of Department last week. Each class had the opportunity to find out about the fire department's new campaign Watch What You Heat! Students learned the proper methods of putting out a grease fire and various ways to make their kitchens safer. Thank you to the Essex Fire Department for sharing your insights. Mm-m-m-m!!! What a wonderful smell wafted through the halls of Holy Name last Wednesday and Thursday. Staff and students were delighted to participate in their first Pasta Day of the school year. Students at HNS showed their `pearly whites' on Thursday and Friday last week for school pictures. On Friday, Oct. 6, staff and students made their way to the parish church for a Thanksgiving celebration. With Father Larry officiating, staff and students came together in prayer and thanksgiving. Thank you to students in Grades 2Q, 2E, and 2H who organized and participated in this mass. What a wonderful way to end the week! Mrs. Mulvey's junior kindergarten classes had the opportunity to meet their `big buddies' from Mrs. Mastromattei's grade six class last week. The children made a craft and read books together.
