Wednesday, September 20, 2006 · Page 2 More candidates join race as deadline approaches BY SARAH FISHER Several candidates entered the crowd of hopefuls this week for the upcoming municipal election Nov. 13. Nick Spidalieri, a businessman in Ward 1, has submitted nomination papers for councillor. Spidalieri owns Nick's Hairstyling on Talbot Street North. He is a former councilor, a former director of the Essex Public Utilities Commission and a past president of the Kinsmen Club of Essex. He is also a member of the Essex 73's executive. Randy McCloskey has also filed for Ward 2. McCloskey is a supplybased technician in the quality systems department at Ford Motor Company in Windsor. He has lived in McGregor for over 10 years. McCloskey said he is interested in several issues affecting Essex, but particularly fiscal responsibility, health care and ambulance service. Spidalieri's filing makes four candidates for Ward 1. Councillor Morley Bowman, Bill Arps, and John Garinger have also filed. Ward 1 Councillor Randy Voakes has said he'll likely decide whether to file right before the Sept. 29 deadline. Ward 2 will be a competition between Councillor Richard Meloche and McCloskey. Paul Innes, a former mayor and municipal representative in Colchester South, has filed for Ward 3 along with Daniel Inverarity, a realtor with Deerbrook Realty Inc. Deputy Mayor Percy Dufour has not filed. Ward 4 Councillor Peter Timmins remains the only candidate for that ward. "Some people feel it's in their best interest to file early and some people feel it's in their best interest to file late," Essex Town Clerk Jerry Marion said. "They plan their strategy after talking to their spouse, but it doesn't affect me at all. I can't do any preparatory work until Oct. 2 in terms of getting ballots printed and things like that." Since the end of August, 14 people have filed paperwork with the Lakeshore town clerk to seek a position on the town's council in the next term of office. Deputy Mayor Tom Bain has filed for the mayor's position in the next term along with David Tremblay. Karen Fallon, Robert Sylvestre, Victoria Beaulieu, Dan Diemer and Vic Vogler are seeking re-election to their current council seats. Len Janisse, councillor for Ward 1 is running for deputy mayor. Other candidates include Francis Kennette and Bev George for Ward 1, Steven Johnson and Al Fazio for Ward 2 and Charles W. McLean for Ward 3. Raymond LaLonde has filed for Ward 4 councillor and Paddy Byrne has filed for councillor in Ward 6. Bob Sylvester, who initially filed for Ward 3 said Sept. 18 he plans to run for the deputy mayor's position. "The names are similar, but Robert Sylvestre is from Stoney Point and Bob Sylvester is from Maidstone on Country Road 42," said Mary Masse, the Town of Lakeshore's clerk about the similarity of the applicant's names. "They are different people." The number of candidates has expanded in Kingsville as well. Seven candidates had filed as of three weeks ago. Mayor Nelson Santos will run against Pat O'Neil, a former mayor. Deputy Mayor Katherine Gunning will also have a challenger. Brian Sanger has filed nomination papers for deputy mayor. One candidate, Alan Goyette withdrew from the running earlier this month. As of the end of August, the only filings for municipal election in Tecumseh were current council members. The list has expanded to include Ray Graveline for mayor and Doreen Ouellette for Ward 1 councillor. Graveline will run against Mayor Gary McNamara. Two candidates will be chosen for Ward 1 where Ouellette will face incumbents Marcel Blais and Rita Ossington. Guy Dorion has submitted nomination papers for his position as councillor in Ward 2, Joe Bachetti has filed for Ward 3 and Joie Jobin is seeking re-election in Ward 4. For the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, incumbent Mary DiMenna and Richard Kniaziew have filed nomination papers for the Leamington-EssexKingsville region. Lisa Soulliere and Fred Lessard have filed nominations for Lakeshore, Tecumseh and incumbent Joan Courtney has filed for LaSalle-Amherstburg. In the French separate board, the Conseil Scolaire de District des Ecoles Catholique, Didier Marotte has filed for Kingsville, Essex and Amherstburg. The French board is divided into two regions and board members represent several communities.
