Wednesday, September 6, 2006 · Page 20 First exhibition game a tough loss for 73's Canadiens outplay 73's in first exhibition BY DANIEL SCHWAB BELLE RIVER The Essex 73's got off to a shaky start in their 2006-07 Great Lakes Junior "C" pre-season Aug. 29, losing their first exhibition game to the Belle River Canadiens, 6-2. Patrick Lauzon put the 73's ahead early in the game with a power play goal assisted by Phil Lywood at 2:32 in the first period. But this would be the only time Essex would hold a lead. Two minutes later, Troy Sajatovich evened the score for the Canadiens, with assists by Steve Tourangeau and Shawn Quigley. Belle River scored again with nine minutes left in the first, as Jerritt Burton tapped in a pass from Kevin Ringrose to make it 2-1. After a scoreless second period, Belle River's Tom Dowell scored two goals in 25 seconds to give the Canadiens a three-goal lead. Follow-up goals by Mark Prron and Troy Sajatovich, his second of the game, put Belle River ahead 6-1 in the final minutes of the third period. The 73's lost to the Canadiens 6-2 during their first exhibition game of the 2006-07 season, Aug. 29 at Lakeshore Community Arena. utes remaining, the 73's Phil Lywood scored a goal to clinch his second point of the night, but that was all the effort Essex would put on the scoreboard for the rest of the game. 73's head coach Tony Piroski said the game was an opportunity for some of the younger players in the Essex camp to hit the ice. "We've got some good young players," Piroski said after the game, mentioning youngsters Brad Quinlan and Mike Puempel. "But, a lot of them won't be here at the start of the regular season." Training camp for the 73's began three weeks ago. Close to 100 prospects tried out for the team. Piroski said there are still about 20 cuts to make before the season's roster is finalized. Canadiens' head coach George Winter said his team is "not reading too much into the exhibition win against the 73's." "Everyone knows we'll have to meet Essex again and they're still the team to beat," he said. The 73's will host the Dresden Jr. Kings on Sept. 19 for their first game of the regular season. 519-726-5804 13121 Walker Rd., McGregor, ON. Cottam also received excellent pitching, allowing seven hits total on Saturday! Mitchell Moody and Jamie Ames both threw brilliantly. Sunday found the tournament down to four teams. Cottam faced Lucan (unbeaten) and Belle River faced Harrow. Cottam jumped out to a first inning 1-0 lead but Lucan was too tal- ented. Despite great defence by Cub players, the end result was a season ending 7-1 defeat. Thanks to all our players and parents for a +20 win season and to all our sponsors that made us look great out there! Also good luck to Dayne Garant, Justin Orton, Mitchell Moody, Mitchell Taveirne, Jacob Taveirne, Scott Smith, Jamie Ames and Dallas Pereira all who go to our Pee Wee team next year.
