Wednesday, August 30, 2006 · Page 12 Coffee Sandwich performs for Dairy Freez crowd BY DANIEL SCHWAB NORTH RIDGE Trevor Cox and Dillon Fuerth have a simple musical philosophy "have fun." Together, the pair of 18year-olds make up the guiact Coffee tar-based Sandwich. The duo performed songs from their first recording, Just a Taste of Coffee Sandwich, at the Dairy Freez in North Ridge Aug. 24. Dozens of the band's friends, family members and other Dairy Freez patrons gathered to enjoy the folksy, coffee-shop style melodies of the North Ridge-based tunesmiths. "We invited almost everybody we know," Cox said. "We're pretty excited." The CD Just a Taste of Coffee Sandwich was also made available for sale. The disc is a blend of songs mostly written by Cox, who sings and plays guitar, harmonica and a little bass. Fuerth, also a guitar player and bassist, plucks away at the six string, soloing over Cox's musings on lost love and a love for `mullet' hairdos. Their light-hearted and almost comic approach to music began with Cox naming the band after a skit by Bob and Doug McKenzie of SCTV fame. After taking music lessons for a couple of years each, the duo started playing songs together around 2003 while attending Essex District High School. Last February, the boys spent some time at a friend's recording space in Ridgetown and laid down the tracks for their debut disc. They pressed 200 CDs in true do-it-yourself fashion, designing the album's cover and booklets and assembling each CD by hand. Cox said he hopes news of the band's newly released disc will prompt more gigs. "We both turn 19 next year and we might start playing at bars," he said.
