The Woodslee native was one of eight girls chosen from 125 contenders during try-outs in London, Ont. and moved on to compete for the Region 3A team, an area stretching from Windsor to Niagara Falls. The team then traveled to Ottawa, where more than 3,000 of the province's top athletes under 16 participated in 20 events at different venues across the city. Premier Dalton McGuinty officially opened the Games at Lynx Stadium on Aug. 9. The girls bunked in the athlete's village at Carleton University and were transported daily to the University of Ottawa to participate in the games. After four days of training, which included six hours of daily practice and classroom instruction on health and diet tips, the Region 3A girls began tournament play. Balkwill and her teammates soon faced off against Pee Wee Interlock Baseball The Essex Legion Pee Wee Interlocks finished off their season with a bang on August 11 and 12. Our bats and pitching came together and, as a team, we were able to capture the silver at our tournament on the weekend. A special thank you goes to our assistant coaches, Bob Quick and Len McClounie, to the parents for their support and, of course, the Essex Legion for their sponsorship. A special thanks to the players for remembering that it is about teamwork and not about personal goals. We did it as a team and thank you for a great summer of baseball. 21, Balkwill said the tournament was a "one chance in a lifetime experience," and being able to play alongside her friend, Monica Roch, was "especially sweet." Balkwill, a left-handed setter, has played locally with the South County Volleyball Club for the past five years. She said this will be her last year participating in the Ontario Summer Games, but she will return to play with the South County team in September.
