Wednesday, August 9, 2006 · Page 16 SEASON END CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 "It was really just a battle of strength," Fitzgibbons said after the game. "On the bus ride down we were pumped and knew we were going to come out flying. They came back really strong in the second half and we climbed back into it." Ravens head coach Glen Mills said the Bears were able to make plays his own team couldn't. "They made plays when they needed to make plays and unfortunately we didn't and that's what it comes down to," he said. "When you get down to the stretch Essex's Victoria Myers competes at the Pan-Pacific Trials in Montreal at the end of July. Myers made consolation finals in both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke. Three weeks earlier, at the Junior Provincial Championships in Ottawa, Myers earned two gold medals in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke while also adding a silver medal in the 400 metre individual medley in 5:27.67. Myers is taking a threeweek break from training before attending a competitive swim camp in Northern Ontario the last two weeks of the summer. Then it is off to grade nine at Assumption High School where she has enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program close to her training centre at the University of Windsor. like this, you've got to make plays that work. We dropped balls and spoiled some opportunities." Bears head coach Keven MacNeill commended the Ravens for being a "wellcoached, very good football team." The Ravens ended the season with a 7-1 record. "We kept getting better and better as the season went on," Quinlan said. "I know we're a championship team and that's why it's so hard to handle." Guelph will move on to face the Niagara Spears in the Adams Conference finals. Myers continues to climb up swimming ranks Victoria Myers, of the Windsor Aquatic Club, continued her steady climb up the swim rankings in Montreal the weekend of July 27-30. Competing against Canada's best at the PanPacific Trials (national championships), Victoria made consolation finals in both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke. Myers' decision to forego the Age Group National Championships in Calgary, where she was almost assured gold medals in her age category, to race at the Senior National meet proved to be the right one. With one Senior National meet behind her last November (the Commonwealth Games Trials), Victoria kept her nervousness in check and raced to personal best times in all four of her races. Victoria was seeded 38th and 41st in her two breaststroke races, but made finals and came out of the meet with two 14th place finishes. Her times of 1:14.05 and 2:38.57 broke her own WAC records by 1.5 seconds and 4.0 seconds respectively. Coach Rod Agar was pleased with his young swimmer, but still sees things he wants to work on. Agar sees bigger things in Victoria's future, pointing out that this meet made her even more determined to be the best. Just 35 years ago, Myers' times would have been World Records.
