The 73's regained the lead 1:15 later, as Evan Stibbard jumped on another rebound and lifted it over a fallen Earles before a shot from the point found its way through a maze of players to beat Wheeler and tie the game at 3-3. Penetang came within a whisker of ending the game in regulation as Ryan Lefaive walked in untouched and was stoned by the Essex goaltender. This game was headed to overtime. Overtime was settled before some fans made it back to their seats. Fifty-two seconds after the puck was dropped, Wheeler couldn't handle a wristshot that fell from his glove and trickled into the goal to give the Kings the 4-3 win. "We need to bear down on our chances," said AJay Sweet. "Our second effort needs to improve. We are losing the small battles, and our face-offs have been horrendous. Everyone needs to give 100 per cent." "We know what we have to do now. We're a team that is very good under pressure. We have to find some heart," said Venables. Essex MP Bruce Crozier made the funding announcement April 20 as part of a series of Ontario Trillium Foundation grants offered to a handful of organizations throughout the county. "It's a huge help," said Ravens coach Glen Mills. "We're very excited." It's been about five years since the Ravens received government funding. Mills said club fundraising helps, but the provincial handout will go a lot further. Everything from helmets, shoulder pads, kneepads and pants have been ordered for the junior players, who last season had to borrow equipment from the Windsor Minor Football Association. About 65 youngsters are currently trying out for the team, which will face 19 other provincial teams this season. Training camp for the senior team also begins this week. Mills is expecting about 200 players to try out, including many returnees from last year's squad. The Ravens advanced to the Ontario Varsity Football League semi-finals in 2006 before being defeated by the Guelph Bears. The two-week camp will keep players busy with 12 practices before final cuts. During pre-camp earlier this month, Mills was already impressed by the DEFENCE! Essex 73's goalie Eddie Wheeler makes a glove save in second period action against the Pentang Kings in game three of the All Ontario Jr. C finals in Essex Sunday. "Hopefully we'll win it this year." The team plays its first exhibition in Toronto May 13. They'll kick off the preseason with a game in Sarnia May 25 and return home for their first regular season game in June against Cambridge. The local team serves as a great stepping stone for younger players looking to take their game to the big leagues, Mills said. "We've had 14 kids get U.S. scholarships, we've had a kid go on to the NFL and a few to the CFL," Mills said proudly. "There are a lot of opportunities."
