Holy Name Hawk Happenings A wonderful aroma wafted throughout the halls of HNS. Hungry for some 'good eats', students and staff had the opportunity to dine on one of their favourite meals last week. Burger Day, one of our classic 'food day' fundraisers, was (again) a success! Students and staff had the choice of purchasing a hamburger or chicken burger covered with all the fixins'. Many thanks to all who participated in this fundraiser . Spring has definitely sprung at Holy Name School! Students came to school dressed to impress on Thursday and Friday last week as they showed their enthusiasm for 'School Picture Day'. Students in JK all the way up to Grade 8 could be seen wearing bright, beautiful colours and posing for the camera wearing smiles equally as bright! Parents are sure to be impressed with the results! In classroom news ... The Grade 1 students have been immersed in a unit of study focusing on the topic of 'Earth Day'. Students have been studying and learning about the many ways that they can help to save our precious planet. The conservation of energy and water has been discussed, with links to the daily life of a child, as well as the concept of 'littering'. Needless to say, the Grade 1's are quite a caring bunch and have pledged to do their part, while also giving family members and friends a friendly 'nudge' to encourage them to act, as well. Earth Day was celebrated on April 22. As a means of extending their current unit of study in Science, students in Grade 1LM travelled to a nearby playground to examine the various structures at work (and at play). The students have recently begun a unit entitled 'At the Playground' through which they will examine, build and describe various structures found at the playground. To further extend this activity, students will have the opportunity to make a model of their chosen playground structure and present their creation to the class. Grade 3 students are currently studying the concepts of beat and rhythm in Music. The percussion family of instruments has also been discussed and, to further their examination of these instruments and the type of music that they produce, students have begun creating their very own drums! Upon completing this project, students will also have the opportunity to use and play their musical instrument, composing their own unique musical creations and arrangements. Listen for the pulsing beat of these drums as you enter the building! Grade 7 student and top Read-A-Thon prize winner Shane Bellmore received the last of the Read-AThon prizes on Monday, April 16. As the top winner, Shane served as Principal for the Day, and dressed the part for it too! His duties helping Mr. included Lozinsky throughout the day in the office and introducing the Half-Pints Basketball team prior to their afternoon anti-bullying presentation. On Friday, April 20, the Holy Name Badminton Team hosted the Annual Friendship Tournament in the school gym. Schools which participated in the tournament in addition to Holy Name were: St. Immaculate Mary's, Conception, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and St. John de Brebeuf. The tournament was a great success! Badminton coaches Mr. Urban, Mrs. Flanagan, and Miss Andreozzi would like to congratulate the students on their effort and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Keep up the great work team! The coaches would also like to thank the following staff for giving up some of their time to help with the concession stand: Miss Bonura, Mr. Oneschuk, and Mr. McLeod. OPEN 9:00 am CLOSED 7:00 pm Sun Parlor Junior School News AUTOGRAPH PLEASE Sam Olivia, left, was delighted to receive an autograph from Essex 73's head coach Tony Piroski at Sun Parlor Junior School last week. Coaches and seven players on the team energized students during a pep rally that wrapped up the school's Guest Reader Week. What an exciting week at Sun Parlor! We had a variety of guest readers from the community coming in to read to our classes. We really appreciate and enjoyed all of the readers, but without a doubt the most excitement of the week came in a sea of black and orange, as the Essex 73's entered the building. After meeting our hometown heroes in the gym, Coach Piroski talked about his team philosphy, emphasizing the importance of working hard at everything you do, as well as teamwork. After a question period, our Sun Parlor "superfans" presented the guys with a basket of healthy snacks for the bus trip. Then, much to our delight, players and coaches joined us in our favourite Daily Physical Activity dance, the Kokomo. Those guys do have some pretty good moves! Afterwards, it was back to class to hear the guys read some of their favourite books and sign autographs. At recess time, the students couldn't believe their eyes as the guys ran onto the field to join the soccer game. And what a great game it was, with the seven players against pretty much the entire school. Although I'm not sure of the game results, one team was clearly dominant. The Sun Parlor students and staff would like to express our sincere appreciation to RJ Hotts, Ryan Barnett, Chris Warren, Anthony Iaquinta, Tanner Gallant, Vince Santia, Mike Lepelaars, Mark Barnett and Tony Piroski for taking the time to come to our school. We hope we bring you good luck against the Pentang Kings!
