Wednesday, February 21, 2007 · Page 15 Red Raider News BY JAY FAWLER SPECIAL TO THE FREE PRESS The Raider Wrestling team had something to prove against the host team at the SWOSSAA Wrestling Championships on Friday. The Riverside Rebels, who hosted both the WECSSAA and SWOSSAA championships, had defeated Essex for the boys WECSSAA crown last week. Friday was a different story as the Red Raiders captured the SWOSSAA boys crown in convincing fashion. Gold medals went to Derek Salden and Andrew Poirier, while Kyle Webb, Ryan Zaccagnini, Andrew Alves and Jeremy Chaves all picked up silver medals in their respective weight divisions. The Boys' Hockey team easily defeated Holy Names 10-2 in WECSSAA quarterfinal action on Thursday. "We came out ready to play," said goalie Josh Charles. "Everyone played hard and did their part." Ben Uras continued his outstanding play with four goals while Jordan Brohman, Tyler Campbell, Evin Kolm, Dan Bacon, Spencer Woltz and Spencer McDowell all added one goal. The boys will play the Villanova Wildcats in the semi-finals in a best-ofthree series. The Senior Boys' Basketball team rolled over the Massey Mustangs on Tuesday 65-56. The boys held onto the lead the entire game and never looked back. Jeremy Butler led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Matt Balkwill added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Questionable calls allowed the Brennan Cardinals to remain close with the Raiders on Thursday. The Raiders were eventually defeated by the Cardinals 62-50. Maisey, Jordy, and Brittany assemble candy-grams for the Valentine's Day fundraiser. Holy Name Hawk Happenings Holy Name Student Council held a very successful Valentine's Day fundraiser and 'spirit-raiser.' Student Council held its annual Candy-gram sale to promote school spirit for Valentine's Day. Students, staff and parents could purchase candy-grams the first week of February for 25 cents each or 5 for $1. Candy-gram sales increased by three hundred this year, bringing the total sold to a whopping 1500 candygrams! A total of over $300 was raised. This dedicated group of Student Council reps gave of their lunch break once again to attach each of the 1500 candy-grams to the heart shaped suckers. As a means of further exposing FSL and Immersion students to the French language, students in Grades 4B, 4F, 4R, and 1N ventured out on a fieldtrip to the Chrysler Theatre in Windsor to participate in the Children's Live Entertainment Festival. These HNS students had the pleasure of viewing `The Tales of Anansi' (`L'araignée Anansi') on Friday, Feb. 16. Anansi the Spider was adopted by the Little Red Theatre from books written by Celia Barker Lottridge. Students listened to and watched these traditional tales from Africa take shape as they were altered to fit the theatre in this special presentation. Four stories were told at the live show, with props such as large hand puppets, special soundtracks, and marvelous masks. The FSL and French Immersion students had the great fortune of listening to these `Tales of Anansi' in French, paying special attention to words/verbs that they were able to recognize, all the while coming across new vocabulary that served to enhance their knowledge of French. New vocabulary words encountered in this presentation will continue to be discussed in the classroom, as well. What a wonderful way to experience the French language outside of the classroom and in a totally different context! C'est magnifique! The girls easily defeated Massey three games straight on Tuesday with scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-16. The girls' toughest match of the season was their last match of the season. The Raiders needed to win only one set against the Brennan Cardinals on Thursday to remain atop the standings. Essex struggled during the match but won the second set in convincing fashion 25-15. Despite losing two sets to the Cardinals, the girls remain on top of the AAA/AAAA standings with a record of 31-2. Brennan finished the regular season a close second with a record of 29-4. The Junior Girls' Volleyball team could not handle the Junior Massey squad on Tuesday losing three games straight with scores of 27-25, 25-13 and 25-6. The girls were able to keep up with Brennan for most of the match on Thursday but fatigue ended their chances of winning. The girls were defeated by the Cardinals 25-17, 16-25, 25-22. The junior girls' record now stands at 14-19. Private Tutoring Available Grades 7 through 10 CONTACT Mr. R. Chedour, 333 County Rd. 34 E. Cottam, ON 16 CENTRE ST. ESSEX, ON.
