Nominations wanted for Citizen of the Year Take a few moments to think about that special person who al- ways seems to be involved in making our community a better place to live. This is your opportu- nity to recognize that person by nominating him or her as Acton Citizen of the Year. The nomination should consist of the name (and phone number if pos- sible) of the person you wish to nominate and the reasons why you have selected this person. There are no real rules of selection, just that the nominee should be someone who you feel has made a difference in our community. Over the years, there have been hundreds of very worthy citizens nominated for this award, but only one is chosen each year. The Acton Rotary Club asks past recipients of this honourable award to judge the nominations so every year there are three different judges with different community involvement and per- spectives. If the person you have nominated in previous years was not selected, nominate them again! The 2002 Citizen of the Year nominations should be sent to the Acton Rotary Club, Box 22, Acton L7J 2M2 or dropped off at Halton Hills Furniture. All nominations must be received by February 28. 2003. Wellington OPP responding to a report of three girls needing assistance on County Road 22 in Erin Township on Fri- day, January 3, found they had fled from a residence on the Third Line following an assault committed on a 22 year-old female. Police said the trio then entered a 1991 Volkswagen, damaged the ignition, re- moved a set of keys and left. They were later located by police and taken into custody. The result is a 15-year-old girl faces assault and mischief under $5,000 charges as well as possession of prop- erty obtained by crime. The other two girls, one 15, the other 12, both face the latter two charges. All three were held in custody until a bail hearing on January 4. The Daughters of Knox met for the first meeting of 2003 on Monday, January 6. President will once again be Renee Watson and the Executive was in- stalled during the church service on Sunday morn- ing. Plans were made for our study to start the New Year and a fundraising project was also initiated. The President led a wor- ship service and a video was shown on the history of the W.M.S. (Womens Missionary Society) of which the Daughters of Knox is an affiliated group. The President also pro- vided muffins, which were enjoyed with tea and cof- fee. Hi again, So it is now 2003 and hope everyone is back to normal as it has been a very busy time. The New Years Gala went well and the Presidents Levwas extremely suc- cessful. This could not have happened if it had not been for the cooperation and hard work of the Executive and some members who gave support. Many thanks to all who did. It was very gratify- ing to see so many of you at- tending the Lev Glad you all enjoyed the entertain- ment. Maybe we can have him back in the future. Hope 2003 is a very safe and happy year for all. See you at the General Meeting Monday, January 13 at 8:00pm and also Ladies Auxillary meeting is tonight, January 9 at 8:00pm. Please try to attend. Thank you. Acton is not the only Halton community experi- encing water problems. Milton has had a problem with the high manganese content in their source wa- ter at Kelso, a naturally occurring element that doesnt pose a health con- cern. Halton Region is con- structing a new $6.3 million water filtration plant at the Regions Kelso plant to correct the prob- lem. The construction team is right on schedule, says the Regions commis- sioner of planning and public works, Patrick Murphy. Work on the new facility will continue throughout the winter. The new system is expected to be on-line in late spring 2003.
