Ontario residents, from all walks of life, have reached-out to Africans facing a devastating food shortage by donating $697,112 to World Visions appeal for southern Africas famine-relief. Christmas is a time for reflection, sharing and giving thanks. For me it is also a time to be grateful for those who help the poor. Today, I give thanks on behalf of our partners in southern Africa who pass along their appreciation to families and individuals from Acton who continue to support World Visions efforts. To date, Canadians have given nearly $2 million to southern Africa to help children in seven famine-stricken countries. How- ever, the number of people affected continues to rise and supplies are used as quickly as they are received. There is hope despite food shortages that threaten the lives of nearly 18 million peo- ple. That hope is based on the continued generosity of Canadians like you. And that generosity is saving lives. Thank you and Merry Christmas. Dave Toycen President, World Vision Canada I hope everyone has survived the Christmas and New Years celebrations. I trust there were not too many headaches after New Years partying. Now news about the meet- ings: Ladies Auxiliary is Thursday, January 9 at 8:00pm. The General Meeting is Mon- day, January 13, at 8:00pm. There will be a discussion about a possible No Smoking at the Legion. Apparently this subject is to be raised at an Open Meeting at the Civic Centre in Georgetown on Mon- day, January 20. I will notify you of the time at a later date. Sadly, we have to give our deepest sympathies to the Swackhamer Family who tragi- cally lost their daughter Lori and her husband Troy Hunter. You are all in our thoughts at this sad loss. UNIVERSAL GAME: Acton Tanner Bantam I captain Brad Ethier (left) and Swedish player Mikael Carlsson met at cen- tre ice with former Acton coach, RCMP officer Harold OConnell, during pre-game ceremonies at Acton arena on Saturday as the Tanners hosted the visiting Swedes. Frances Niblock photo With the Christmas season almost at a close, Patricia Shan- non of Rockwood is hoping the spirit of giving can go on. Over the past three years she has been raising funds and tak- ing veterinary supplies to the Havana Province, Cuba. While visiting the Village of Canasi, she met two children, a boy aged 11 and girl aged 9, who were born with no primary layer of skin. The childrens condition causes burns to their body when exposed to light, which results in painful cracks and leisions over most of their bodies. As a result the children have a special need for many items, second hand sheepskin pads for Share Canadas blessings sitting and sleeping, cotton clothing, and bedding, masks and latex gloves, over the counter vitamins, painkillers, cold remedies, decongestants, kleenex for the children and their parents, fresh bandages, powdered milk. All items nonexistant for the average Cu- ban, that we take for granted here in Canada. Patricia will be returning to Cuba on January 16. If you would like to help items can be dropped off at VIP Grooming (856-2218), Monatans Sunsations (856- 0770) both in Rockwood, or at Pamper Me (853-2302) and The New Tanner (853-0051) in Acton. 17 Mill Street, East, Acton, Ontario L7J 1G8 Tel.
