Wednesday, November 22, 2006 · Page 2 Essex lawyer named County justice of the peace council to BY FREE PRESS STAFF Retired Essex lawyer Kirk Walstedt was recently named as a justice of the peace by Attorney General Michael Bryant. Walstedt, who graduated from law school at the University of Windsor in 1989, will be sworn in Nov. 15. The new position will allow Walstedt to sit in courts for highway traffic and provincial offences. He will also have the power to marry couples in civil ceremonies and work in bail hearings, among other duties. "I'm very pleased," Walstedt told the Free Press Nov. 9. "It's a good move." Walstedt applied for the position a few years ago before retiring from his local practice, WalstedtRenick. When notified that he would be approved for the position, Walstedt admits to being a little surprised. "So much for a rest," he joked.
