Wednesday, September 27, 2006 · Page 24 Atom A Forest Machine Welcome fans to a Friday night classic. Right from the opening draw you could see Essex was in for a battle against Tecumseh. Shortly in, Kyle Hill stood tall and stopped a 2 on 0. Essex responded with some hard work from Mitchael Salter, Adam Zanier and Eric Rawlins. Some steady defense kept the game scoreless until three minutes left in the first when Tecumseh notched one. On the next shift Dalton Langlois, Jonah Fuerth and Jordan Hooker showed their offensive power with Hook blocking a shot at the point sending Jonah in alone, but the low stick side shot was stopped coolly by the Eagles netminder. With Essex short, Tecumseh struck again with 12 seconds left, to go up 2-0 after one. The second period started with some great action resulting in Essex going two men up and Dave Stafford rushing in from centre, getting his own rebound and, after a wraparound attempt, stuffing the puck in off a scramble to make it 2-1 Tecumseh. Trying hard to get the equalizer Essex had a couple of great chances but couldn't connect. Late in the period Tecumseh scored while on a 5 on 3 to go up 31 after two. The third period started fast and furious as Dalton Langlois hustled back to stop a breakaway. Even with Kyle Hill making great saves, Tecumseh went up 41 with seven minutes left. Despite being down, Essex worked hard and Brett Rickeard hit William Wuerch with a beautiful outlet pass at the blue line. Wuerch busted in alone and scored high blocker side to put Essex back in it with four minutes to go. With time running out Essex got two good rushes up ice by Jordan Hooker and Jeff Miller but the Eagles' defense and goalie held the fort. With a minute and a half to go, the dreaded curfew went, giving Tecumseh a 4-2 victory. The next match against Windsor started out even, but shortly in Windsor caught a break and went in alone only to be robbed by Josh Myers with a low toe save. Not to be outdone, Adam Zanier intercepted a pass at Windsor's blueline and got a great scoring chance but the Spitfire goalie was hot as well. The scoreless tie was broke at the four-minute mark when Windsor scored off a rebound. The first ended 1-0 Windsor. Windsor came out flying in the second and was up 30 before you knew it. This seemed to fire up the boys as A.J. Market had a nice rush up ice and took a hard hit, but the puck came loose to Jonah Fuerth and he fired it home to make it 3-1. The celebration was short-lived as Windsor came right back with a roofer. Essex seemed a little dazed and confused as Windsor came down on a breakaway, but Josh stood tall. This fired the boys up and Adam Zanier made a nice play to Dillon Jarvis but the goalie robbed him. The line of Mitch Hudvagner, Brett Rickeard and William Wuerch worked hard but couldn't bury one. On a power play, Essex was caught napping when Windsor roofed another one. With two men left alone in front, Windsor went up 6-1 by the end of the second. After a little pep talk at the bench, Mitchael Salter came in with a great shot and Jordan Hooker got the rebound, but to no avail. The boys worked hard but Windsor got the last goal for a final score of 7-1. On September 22 the Ravens played against Chatham. The team appeared equally matched with shots on goal. Raven's goaltender Chris Drouillard stopped 10 shots compared to Chatham's nine in the first period. Both teams received three penalties and the period ended scoreless. The second period proved a rougher game with numerous penalties on both sides. Chatham took advantage of the situation scoring two power play goals. The third period saw the Ravens turning on the power and never giving up. Through all the effort, they could not put the puck past the Chatham goalie. The period ended 4-0 for Chatham. On September 24, the Ravens were in their home town playing opposite the Belle River Rink Rats. Both teams drew many penalties. Belle River was awarded a penalty shot in the second period but Chris Drouillard had no problem making the save. The Rink Rats were up 20 when Essex's Raven No. 6 Spencer Smith scored the first goal of the season at 4:45 remaining in the second period. If it weren't for Chris Drouillard's goaltending abilities the game would have resulted in a higher score. The end result was Belle River 3 - Essex 1. Keep up the good work boys. Your turn is next.
