Wednesday, September 27, 2006 · Page 19 Holy Name Hawk Happenings What an exciting week it's been! With the month of September well under way, students and staff have, once again, mingled and adjusted to the routines of the school year. On Friday, Sept. 15, staff and students made their way down Fairview Avenue to celebrate a `Welcoming Mass' at Holy Name Church. Grades 6Mas and 6Mar, along with their `buddies' from SKR, began by offering gifts that illustrated the most important aspects of `school life'. Voices from the choir echoed throughout the church as the students in 6Mar led the congregation in song. Many thanks to Fr Larry and Mrs. Bondy for assisting in our celebration of faith. The Holy Name School community would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest addition to our staff. We welcome Ms. Horoky, who will be teaching a newly-formed group of SK's. HNS wishes you a wonderful year. HNS sports are underway. The soccer season began for both the boys' and the girls' soccer teams, with outstanding results! The girls' team along with their coaches, Ms. McGill and Ms. Bonura traveled to Maidstone to face the girls' team from St. Mary's School. After a great game of defensive play, the Hawks emerged victorious. The final score was 5-1, with goals scored by Ashley Bonneau (3), Jenna Jubenville (1) and Kim Barry (1). Thursday, Sept. 21 was `Meet the Teacher Night' at Holy Name School. Students and their families had the opportunity to join the HNS staff for a BBQ and `social'. The weather held up quite well for this outdoor event where teachers circulated to greet and meet students' families. Many thanks to the HNS Student Council members who assisted in this event from wrapping and serving, to face-painting and clean up an excellent job was done by all! Thanks also to the many families who took the time to join us at this event. Students beware! You may begin to see your teachers in some pretty odd poses. The HNS milk program is set to begin on Monday, Sept. 25 and it's not only the students who are excited about this great initiative. Thanks to all who participated in the program. Here's to healthy snacks and lunches strong teeth and bones, too! TRADE TRAILER ON TOUR Doug Plumb, a guidance counsellor at Forster High School in Windsor, gives instruction to students from Jim Bondy's class Sept. 24 in a trailer outside Maplewood Public School. The trailer belongs to the Greater Essex County District School Board and will travel to three public schools and two Catholic schools in the county to introduce elementary school students to the idea of studying a trade. The program is part of the Ministry of Education's Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. Maplewood was selected because of Essex District High School's designation as a centre for trade-based programs. Free Press / Sarah Fisher Maplewood Tiger Tales One of the many activities going on at Maplewood is Concert Band. Grade six, seven and eight students have the opportunity to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, saxophone and many other instruments. The band has just started practices and is learning some new music. Band conductor and music teacher, Mr. Hencher, expects the band will be ready to play in front of the school by the end of October. "It's a nice experience to be able to play in front of an audience before high school," says band member Erika. And she's right! The band goes on trips throughout the year, including a Christmas tour and a visit to Canada's Wonderland to be adjudicated. The music program will also be having its own fundraiser of cookie dough sales starting in November. Profits will go toward new music, instrument repairs and assisting with trip costs. All of Maplewood expects that the band will have another successful year! by Grace Teskey and Melanie Boissoneault 169 IRWIN AVE. Meloche and students from across the county took part in a program hosted by the Essex County School Bus Safety Association. The students learned how to handle several emergencies such as putting out a fire on the school bus and what to do if another student becomes ill.
