Why miss work or school for court? Fire safety for students Operation Home Safe, a new fire-safety initiative, is helping to ensure that postsecondary students living in rental accommodations this year will be watchful for potential fire hazards. The Ontario Safety League has partnered with the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Electrical Safety Authority and Toronto Fire Services to increase awareness among students and the public about fire safety basics. Students are asked to take precautions when cooking, smoking or using candles in their rooms or apartments. Encouraging students to install smoke alarms and to have a planned fire escape route is also a focus of the campaign. To determine if a student accommodation has been inspected for Fire Code compliance, call the local fire department. For more information on Operation Home Safe, contact Brian J. Patterson, president of the Ontario Safety League, at 905-625-0556, ext. 230. * Essex Legion awarded 3rd place based on head-to-head record against The Whack (3-0-1).
