Wednesday, August 2, 2006 · Page 16 Essex Yellowjackets Mosquito B The Yellowjackets traveled to Wallaceburg last weekend for the annual Mosquito tournament. Friday's game was a matchup against Petrolia. From the very start, our boys showed they were on a mission. Tyson Way, Kyle Hill, Brandon Flood and Matt Krutsch all got timely hits to jump to a 4-0 lead. Josh Grondin provided a stellar performance on the mound allowing Petrolia only three hits in four innings with Brandon closing it out in the 5th inning for the victory. second game Our matchup was against Waterdown. Our boys showed a lot of heart and desire, but the pitching performance from Waterdown was hard to overcome. That being said, our guys were in the game until the opponent opened it up in the 4th and went on to win. Our pitchers, Kyle, Jonah Hurst and Tyson did a great job on the mound despite going up against a lot of heavy hitters from Waterdown. The Essex Mosquito Interlock team wound up their season this weekend with playoff championships in Leamington. The team lost their final game against Harrow by just one run. Essex Mosquito Interlock team finishes season This year's Essex Mosquito Interlock team saw 14 boys play pitch ball for the first time. The team was Austin Aldridge, Steven Cammalleri, Issac Chisholm, Kevin Curtis, Brock Fenton, Austyn Gordon, Mitchell Hannigan, Joshua Kigar, Jesse Market, Tyler Martindale, Derek Morris, Joshua Myers, Jarrett Nantais and Jake Walton. The coaches were Nick Kigar, Dave Kigar and Bill Fenton. At the end of the regular season our record was a cool .500. This was quite an accomplishment as we were the only team out of 14 Interlock teams to have all first year players. The season took us to Kingsville, Amherstburg, Leamington and Harrow. Thanks go out to Ryan Martindale and Seth Walton for coming up from rookie and playing a couple of games for us in the season. This past weekend was the playoff championship in Leamington with our first game on Friday night. We faced a strong Leamington team and ended up losing the game. The boys knew that the next loss would end the season. We had to face another determined Leamington team at 11 a.m. on Saturday. This game came down right to the end. We were last at bat and down by two. The boys were not ready to end the season and scored three runs to win the game. Our next game was against an Amherstburg team with a fast pitcher. This game was also close and we didn't need to be last at bat as we were ahead 9 to 6. Sunday at 9 a.m., we met Harrow, who we had played in the regular season. This was one of the best games the boys had played and we fell short by one, for a final score of 10 to 9. On the whole it was a really good season and a great accomplishment to go as far as we did. We are all so proud of the boys and cannot wait for next year. We also need to thank all the parents who helped, especially Heather Hannigan for scoring all year, Wayne Curtis and Keith Martindale for helping at practices and coaching when called upon, and Issac Chisholm and family for bringing a cooler of cold drinks and keeping it full this very hot weekend. And a special thank you to the enthusiastic playoff batboy, Sam Fenton. See you all next year. Tilbury was next up and this matchup was going to be close. The cheering section, led by Madonna Hill, got the Yellowjackets pumped and ready to go. Some great infielding by Dave Stafford, Matt, Tyson, Kyle and Jonah, led by Josh on the mound, kept the game scoreless. Tilbury opened up the scoring in the 3rd but not without some good fielding by Brad Maroun, Courtney Jarvis and Tyler Boissonneault. Our offense got going in the 5th inning with base hits by Brandon, Matt and Tyler, followed by Vince Taylor's 3-run triple. Dave and Mitchell Magee, showing great patience at the plate, drew walks to extend the inning, but in the end Tilbury got the final out with a 10-6 win. Thanks to all the coaches led by Joe Grondin for teaching and developing our boys' skills and to our sponsor Tim Hortons. Keep on trying guys, and we'll keep cheering. Interlock girls slo-pitch championship The Ernie's TV team from Kingsville won the intermediate girls' slo-pitch championship Sunday afternoon in Leamington. The ladies did it the hard way. Having to defeat Tim Hortons of Amherstburg twice to claim the top honours, the Kingsville team rose to the occasion playing a strong game both offensively and defensively. In the senior slo-pitch championship, I-Kon of Amherstburg beat out Woodslee Credit Union of Kingsville. Re-Max of Amherstburg KINGSVILLE MINOR HOCKEY K.M.H.A., P.O.
