Mother's Day Bird-A-Thon By Denise Paulsen Birdwatching enthusiasts, along with anyone looking to enjoy a two-hour nature walk through Rockwood's Conservation Area, are in- vited to participate in the seventh annual Mother's Day Bird-a-thon this Sunday morning, starting at 9 a.m. This is a sponsored walk with pledged donations go- ing to S.O.A.R., Songbirds Only Aviation Rehabili- tation, where "birding" participants meet at 8:30 a.m. to register for the spring event. A light lunch will be provided. Last year, the Mother's Day nature walk raised $3,600 to support the wild- life facility's goals. Judi Drake, wildlife rehabilita- tion specialist, is president of the centre that cares for injured songbirds that are admitted, rehabilitated, tagged and then released. In 2009, the facility took in 172 birds, including a Hermit Thrush, Hairy Woodpecker and American Goldfinch. If you're unable to make it to Rockwood - you can par- ticipate in the birding event from your favourite bird- watching spot anywhere in Ontario. Fundraising efforts can be donated to support the local avian rehabilitation centre that tries to keep the area filled with the sound of nature's music. For pledge forms and more information about this Sun- day's birding event contact Judi Drake 519-856-2847 or online at soar@sentex.net.
