election in township In 1968 only 29 8 per cent of the townships eligible voters turned out but returning officer K C Lindsay said he cant remember a better turnout than this one Tom Hill the present deputy reeve became the first Glen Williams resident to occupy the reeves chair since Walter Bingham in 1884 when he soundly beat challenger Malcolm Freeman 1384 votes to Mr HOI replaces retiring reeve George In one of the most Interesting contests councillor Russell Miller took over the deputyreeves chair poUlng votes Councilor Ken Marshall placed second with 776 votes and Peter Bowman finished third with 220 Newcomer heeds poll Newcomer beaded the pons In the six way race for three council seats with a total of 1007 votes seven better than another newcomer lawyer Richard who polled Incumbent councillor Leslie placed third with narrowly beating Ward who received 894 votes In his first council bid J Snow and George Maltby placed fifth and sixth respectively Mr Snow received votes candidates were given an opportunity to speak Mr Hill thanked all his supporters and promised to do his utmost to handle township affairs well If I dont feel Ive done a satisfactory Job at the end of two years I wont let my name stand for nomination in the next election he said Mr Freeman thanked his supporters and expressed the hope someone else would come forward to oppose Mr HUllnthe next election so that he could take a run at council Deputyreeve elect Miller thanked his supporters and said he would do his utmost to see things that should be done are done in the township Congratulate opponents Councillor Marshall congratulated Mr HfU and Mr Miller and assured ratepayers they would be well represented He expressed his disappointment about not being successful but added we must accept the verdict of the people Thanking his supporters councillor Marshall said his interests still lie with the township Mr Bowman thanked his supporters and said he will be back to sit in as an observer at council meetings in the new year Mr Bowman attended most of township council meetings in the past year An opponent of the Golden Horseshoe Mr Bowman told reporters he didnt feel publicity his opposition to the received affected him adversely but admitted he was disappointed he received only votes in SUvercreek his own ward Mr Coxe thanked his supporters and congratulated all candidates I proud pleased and humble so many people saw fit to elect me he said He promised to do his best to warrant the trust put In him by electors Expressing special thanks to his workers Mr said he felt many votes were cast not for him but for his workers Overwhelmed Mr Howitt said he was overwhelmed at the confidence voters had placed In him and promised to work hard not to let them down He thanked all his supporters and added he la delighted to be included In a group on council he feels will be compatible Councillor Leslie thanked supporters and promised to do his best for ratepayers over the next two years Mr Brownridge described the campaign as a good clean fight he enjoyed very much He thanked supporters and hinted he may be back to run again next time Mr Snow congratulated all
