my thanks She writes a mean column So thanks again tor having her in your paper and I hope you pass my thanks Mrs By Mrs Elsie Reed A congenial and happy group met on Tuesday last for the regular afternoon meeting of the Golden Age Club Business consisted mainly of final details for the Christmas dinner and Invitations from the Canadian Legion and Rotary Club were given out It was decided to buy six more card tables for the clubs use Two tables were donated A letter and Christmas wishes came from the tone executive A report of the tone rally was read for approval I thought maybe the young folks of Rock- wood would like to read about an evening spent In one of the older homes of their village many years ago I think it is nice to keep incidents of the old town alive as the Charles Strange home and later the home of his aged mother and her daughter Mary Miss Strange Invited me to come over and make some Christmas candy So I went but she hadnt a very good fire for cooking things and I used too much liquid It simply would not make I did everything to coax It to thicken but Finally we opened the door of the heater and set the pan right on the coals That did the trick and we produced some delectable candy To pass the time until she could have a taste of the candy the aged mother started to repeat a little poem that used to be In our readers Twinkle twinkle little star Line after line she repeated until she had repeated the whole poem What a wonderful memory Could anyone in Rockwood today do that A knock was heard at the door my mother stood there If you want to get home tonight come on There is a blizzard raging She had come to help me home through the deep hardpacked drifts and blinding snow That was about fifty years ago but I have not forgotten those two wonderful mothers and Miss Mary Yours with a backward look MllllcentMilroy S The brown house stood on the vacant lot next to Mary St Challenges accuracy of story Dear Sirs I have often been tempted to challenge statements in your weekly featured article Toe Clergy Speaks out but have come to tolerate it with the same attitude as I tolerate the comic sections in the Daily Newspapers However last weeks feature I think shouldnt go unchallenged Please find enclosed a portion of Playboy Nov 1970 A Johnson Wicked Willy According to a newspaper story I read space scientists at Green Belt Maryland bare found proof that the Bible is accurate when It speaks In the book of Joshua of the an standing still for about a day and in 2 Kings of a shadow going backward on a sundial The source of this newspaper ac count is given as Harold HUl president of the Curtis Engine Company of Baltimore who is further Identified as a consultant in the space program Can you tell me whether or not this supposed confirmation of these Biblical miracles actually took place Larry A Webb Rockford Illinois As far as we can tell it didnt The Space Flight Centre at Green Belt Maryland informs us that It had no such problems made no such calculations and never heard of Harold Mr Hill does exist but when Playboy contacted him he sent us a form letter that stated that he has misplaced the source of information but had I not considered the source to be completely reliable I would not have made use of this information in the first place Interesting comparisons emerge Dear Sir Your edition of Nov i made Interesting reading containing as it did reports of the Council in action at a regular meeting followed by but weeks elec tioneering platform The acts and the speeches make interesting comparisons in some cases On the one hand a promise is made to fight to the death for the preservation of every individuals rights yet several current points of concern emerge- Has Council written to Minister Jaaueaon to protest the proposed land possibly of our entire township while he seeks a further extension to make up Us mind this could affect all individuals and Impose acute hardships Have they researched and questioned the propriety of the proposed step In an off Idal capacity as representatives of all the residents If the freeze is permitted without resistance and property valors fall win our assessments be reviewed downwards On the OttawavSaeglitz problem I have to assume that building permits were applied for in both cases Is it not the intention when application Is made for a permit that the authorities have the opportunity to inspect the plans or the she to ensure compliance with requirements If a knowledgeable control is maintained the least result could have been the pointing out of an awkward situation to the two parties concerned If as one Councillor opined the bylaw can be interpreted two ways then Council has a moral obligation for allowing such a situation to exist It seems to me that bylaws are passed but the knowhow or the will to enforce them is lacking There have been a number of such infractions where no action is taken residents notice these and that no steps are taken then apathy sets In The recent Issue of a gravel pit being permitted to operate without a license Is one surely councils positional MB hearing was severely weakened by in the absence of positive action condoning it Approved plans are made bylaws passed only to be changed when some business enterprises though lawyers well- versed in word manipulation plead ignorance of our plan or dangle the grub- eaten carrot of a few dollars assessment And if to quote the greatest natural resource of the Township la Its people why cannot a more determined stand be taken to protect them Gravel pit licenses have gone from to why not have them put a deposit which can be used to finance legal fees should they continue to merely give Up service to the law Why at source are gravel pit owners not required to ensure that their customers comply with the traffic act which calls for a tarpaulin to cover their peaked loads peaked to the extent that much gravel falls on the roads causing damage to cars and endangering the lives of those in them Whilst this Is not Intended to be directly critical of Council It will I hope be regarded suggestive of the apparent need for action In areas which to me and many others seem to lack the attention to detail which they need Yours very truly Kenneth Campbellviile SEE THE NEW SUiWLE SMWHOBILES COMPLCTI A SIR To Chow From
