Watson retained the seat on the Halton County Board of Education shared with by defeating challenger Bert Hlnton by over 500 votes Acton Hydro Commissioners were all returned to office chairman Wllf McEachern once again leading the polls as well as collecting the most votes of any candidate running for office The council race which many observers thought would see sweeping changes saw few as Councillor Peter Marks once again headed the polls with votes closely pursued by fellow sophomore Bill Coats two votes back Veteran Earl Masales came next with followed closely by Chapmen and Jack Greer with and respectively Making his first bid for political office Norm Elliott took the final council seat with 616 votes 24 less than Councillor Greer Four defeated Defeated In their bid for a seat on council were challengers Dave Muckle who trailed Mr Elliott by votes Mrs Betty Eastwood with former councillor BUI Williams with 429 and finally John with 356 Many of the candidates for office were disappointed In the small turnout of voters 469 per cent as opposed to the per cent who voted at the last municipal election two years ago Some saw this as due to the lack of any major issue in the election others felt it reflected the apathy of the electorate but all agreed there was a need for concern Mondays weather was perfect for an outing cold but with the sun shining and only a few the pattern followed that of the race for mayor and deputyreeve Incumbent Tom Watson took an early lead and lengthened It until he owned a substantial vote margin in town Figures arriving from Nassaoaweya gave Mr Watson a further margin over challenger Mr Returns for Acton council often reflected the area In which the candidates reside a result the lead changed hands as returns arrived but early returns once garnet Mckenzie New deputy again determined the results of the race Councillor Greer showed strong In his own Ward One with votes Marks and Coats made a strong showing In Glenlea and Lakeview subdivisions as did defeated candidates Final returns for the Hydro Commission arrived from polling subdivision at 1230 am with only returning officer Joe Hurst his assistant Grant Usher the mayor and members of the press still waiting They followed the pattern set earlier giving Hydro chairman Wilf McEachem a substantial margin followed by Commissioners Brown Tyler and challenger Doug Manning who missed out on the final seat by votes Congregate Candidates congregated In election headquarters the town offices and offered one another congratulations or felicitations whatever the case may be Most were interested in the results from Esqueslng and and there was also a strong Interest in results of the Georgetown election which saw incumbent reeve BUI Hunter toppled from office Returning officer Joe Hurst reports there were spoiled and unused ballots for mayor 30 for deputyreeve 28 for council for hydro commission and 30 for the board of education Assisting the returning
