were on a On tario exchange program for two weeks Their hosts were Janet and Lois Hunter of R 1 Burlington and Rae Acton On arriving in Toronto August Ken Knox assistant summer supervisor of junior farmers took them to the Ontario Agricultural College where they toured the buildings observed Provincial Junior Farmers Field Day and sat in at a Junior Far provincial director meeting From here Heather went to the dairy farm of Harold Jenkins In Elgin County for a week At the same time Keith was guest at the beef and soybean farm of Doug Taylor Elgin County With their genial hosts they visited Aylmer Fair and Achievement Day the shoreline of Lake Erie London area and College of Agriculture Meet Following their week stay in Elgin County the mo Manitoba travellers met their second hosts at a get acquainted party in Balllnafad Community Hall Friday night They returned to these farms for their last week in Ontario At the Hunter farm Heather Is learning everything she can about sheep and beef steers On Keith is getting to know the dairy business at the Swackhamcr century old Guernsey farm have never been with dairy cattle or sheep before admitted Heather and am trying to learn everything I can about them Heather and Keith Janet and enjoyed bowling a weiner roast and tours of Poultry Farms Leaver Mushrooms and Bennett Shorthorn farm on Saturday Sunday they par tldpated in a car rally with Prince Edward County Junior Farmers and later enjoyed a barbecue with the group Some work too On Monday Keith farmed all day at Swackhamer s He caught on to running the combine and trucks right away said At the same time Heather motored to the Blue Mountains of and to Georgian Bay with Janet The countryside Is so scenic and the hills so rolling she said Tuesday the group visited Niagara Falls the wax museum and Skyline Tower At night Heather and Janet toured Hamilton and the Skyway bridge A tnp to Burlington Mall and a 4 meeting at the A tken farm Acton were on the girls agenda Wednesday Races at Golden Horseshoe was the evening entertainment for the boys On Thursday they visited the C E in Toronto and Friday flew back home to Manitoba Prior to their flight from Manitoba Keith and Heather were not acquainted with one another Heather 19 is a native of Manitoba a town of 100 people She is the oldest of three children While she does not live on a farm she owns horses and is an active member of H Home Economics and Pony Clubs Mixed farming Keith is the youngest of four boys and lives in Manitoba a village of Mixed farming is his family bread and butter They raise beef and dairy cattle horses and wheat for commercial selling While Keith did not write home to his during his stay in Ontario he admitted he would correspond back and forth with Rae And ho did In Ontario and Keith seven rolls Both hosts volunteered to take their guest for a week stay In September Lois Hunter and will attend Junior Farmers Camp at Collingwood for a week Ontario apple growers must strive to meet competition With great increases in apple acreage being planted in North America during recent years a great deal of competition for markets from other apple growing regions is anticipated Apple growers in Ontario will have to become more efficient In the use of land labor and good cultural practises to meet this competition To assist growers to this end a series of special meetings are being held in six locations across the province sponsored by the Ontario Apple Commission and the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food Meet Sept The meeting being held for apple growers in the area li being held on the evening of Sept at Chudleigh Bros Orchard High way just north of Milton Featured on the program will be Dr D Heinickc S Department of Agriculture Washington who will talk about and demonstrate pruning and training of apple trees Bob Fisher of the Canada Research Station Vlneland Station will discuss a sprayer evaluation project which has been conducted In the past two years in an attempt to discover the limitations of sprayers being used to apply pesticides for insect and disease control With emphasis being placed on apple quality for consumer satisfaction and to meet com petition two talks with emphasis on quality will be presented at this meeting Mr Reid Dunham of the Farm Products Inspection Branch will discuss the selection and grading of a pies for con trolled atmosphere storage and Sam University of will discuss indices for determining optimum maturity in Mcintosh apples To accommodate such a full program the meeting will get underway at clock Show calves The second part of the meeting look place the farm of Mr Bob and Cathy showed calves shorthorns and Russell Murray showed Bill as he was absent President Bob talked about showmanship and Its importance The rest of the members then led the calves with Russell Murray as judge Next all calves were led back to the barn except one which was used for a demonstration Bob Lasby conducted this demonstration on cleaning clipping and grooming the calf Following this was the official opening of the meeting which had been postponed in order to beat the dark The President opened the meeting with the Pledge and Carol Somerville secretary read the minutes of the last meeting which were adopted as read The secretary then took roll call and the business of building a float was brought up by Bob They discussed the float and nominated Keith Cathy Bob Lasby Norma Leslie Susan Murray and Carol Somerville for a committee night Next the secretary handed out name badges to be worn at events We were told quiz night was to be on Sept ana projects must be completed that day Susan Murray that the meeting be adjourned and Tom Parker seconded it Refreshments were served and Pat
