MUSEUM MUSINGS By Buzz Lein Presumably, it is now a matter of some six weeks or so before the By-Law establishing the Museum Board will be passed. Now, all this means is that a bunch of people have got to stop talking and start working.' A board has been set up but until there is a by-law it cannot be officially recognized. It has been a matter of personal satisfaction that so many of our citizens are interested in this project now. No kidding, I hear from Beardmore, Orient Bay, Red Rock, Hurkett, Dorion and Thunder Bay about all this history. In fact, everywhere the Gazette gets to has enthusiastic supporters. The name "Red Rock" is older than I had previously thought I found a reference to it in 1852 and by the tone of the article, this name had been used for years prior to 1852. The locality of course, was the mud flats at Nipigon. The red rock that it was named after was that big cliff over there near the Quebec Lodge It is at mileage 66 west of Schreiber if you are technically minded. The writer has been out in Nipigon Bay on occasion when the light was just right and there is no damn doubt about it being red. We are going to need some local things for our museum. Anybody know where we can get a dog sleigh complete with harness? We also would like to get a line on a flint lock musket and some powder horns - and what about photo graphs? How about looking through the family album for oldies but goodies? And 'for heavens sake don't throw stuff out just because it is old. Check before you eject! POST CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE Broken Toys littering the house driving -you mad after Christmas? Don't throw them out. The Macdiarmid Metis Womans association will fix them up and pass them on to needy children. They can also use good clean used clothing for their proposed thrift shop. Toys and clothing can be left at Doctor Harvey's office._ The Nipigon GAZETTE -Wednesday, January 12, 1972, Page 5- Group Committee of Cubs and Scouts, Nipigon held a meeting on January 5th. Six new tents are being purchased so that the outdoor activities can commence as-soon as possible. Both groups reported a good first quarter with attendance being good. The Cub leaders expressed their appreciation to the parents of Cubs for coming out to the meetings. Preparations for the Father and Son Banquet to be held on February 20th are underway. Further news on this later. The coat hanger drive will get well underway this month. Watch for more news on this.
