Unfortunately the pressure is on for the small community to disappear. Part of this comes from subtle pressure from those who have money enough to escape temporarily from their ashphalt and concrete jungles, to come up here and visit us. Their put down is usually framed in the words, "What do,you people live on up here" ? Within the community its self there is a small minority who cannot wait till retirement to go some place better, or who cannot wait for the next transfer hopefully to a larger place. Not everyone wants to live in a small community, but unfortunately pressures that are being brought to bear to make small rural communities as obsolete as a horse blanket. One typical example of a large corporation which by its organizational policy, is preparing the ground for the burial of small communities is Ontario Hydro. Ontario Hydro pursues a | relentless program for centralisation and consolidation. This began by the moving of the Nipigon line crew to Thunder Bay, where by some ill conceived logic, it was felt they would be able to provide better service to our area. Ontario Hydro has also pursued the course of action in which they feel a small group of men living at an actual plant site required to do many different jobs could not work as efficiently as if they lived In one large community. Each man then could specialize in one job, doing the same thing day after day. This is good in theory, but like so many large organizations they have forgotten that, though specialization on paper indicates greater productivity the human element is still there, and a bored employee away from his family is not going to be very efficient. The tragedy of Ontario Hydro's efficiency program is almost comical when it becomes apparent that they forgot that it takes two days to travel to Kenora to spend four hours on a job which a man previously located in Kenora could do in the same four hours.____ phone 887-2H1 Plaza Theatre nipigon, ontario. 2 SHOWS EACH NIGHT - 7 & 9 PM. In large advertisements we are told that they have, "Improved customers service", by centralizing it all in Sault Ste. Marie. It defies logic to understand how dialing a phone number to Sault Ste. Marie is going to provide as good a service as going to a local station talking (Continued on page 4 NO 1)
