Free Community CPR Days Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in Canada claiming approximately 20,000 to 30,000 lives each year. Part of the findings in a recent study showed that a lack of knowledge by average citizens in performing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) contributes to the survival of cardiac arrest victims. The 2005 guidelines emphasize that high-quality CPR, particularly effective chest compressions, contributes significantly to the successful resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients. Studies show that effective chest compressions create more blood flow through the heart to the rest of the body, buying a few minutes until defibrillation can be attempted or the heart can pump blood on its own. The guidelines recommend that rescuers minimize interruptions to chest compressions and suggest that rescuers "push hard and push fast" when giving chest compressions. The most significant change to CPR is to the ratio of chest compressions to rescue breaths ­ from 15 compressions for every two rescue breaths in the 2000 guidelines to 30 compressions for every two rescue breaths in the 2005 guidelines Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time, often without warning. Published studies show more than 70 per cent of arrests happen in the home and the majority of those are witnessed. For every minute treatment is delayed the rate of survival falls by ten percent. By eight minutes the ability to resuscitate becomes next to impossible. Now, a new study has found that your best chance of surviving cardiac arrest is CPR done immediately by a bystander while waiting for EMS or Fire services to arrive with a defibrillator. CPR increases the survival rate by four fold. Rapid defibrillation, which is the next critical link in the chain of survival, with a portable defibrillator to restore a heartbeat increases survival three fold. But performing CPR is one of the links in a long chain of events that is needed to give the person the best chance of survival but only one in seven people know how to perform CPR. By remembering to take the time to learn CPR, you could save a life. The Town of Essex, under the guidance of the Fire and Rescue Service and Parks and Recreation, will be hosting two CPR training days, the first scheduled for June 9 in Essex and the second scheduled for October 13 in Harrow. These days are intended to teach adult basic CPR in two hours to as many people as possible at no cost to the participants. The goal is to promote CPR and to encourage those to start CPR if they are ever in a situation that requires it. These CPR days do come with some nominal expenses for literature and training material.
