Ropers member sweeps AAU Illinois Junior Olympic qualifier Champions announced Paul Renick of Woodslee, a local member of the Leamington AcroRopers, combined with his teammates to sweep 20 gold and one silver medal at the Illinois AAU Junior Olympic qualifier for jump rope in South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill. Paul captured a first place All-Round Gold medal in Single Rope, Pairs and Group Routine, in addition to taking first place in Single Speed, Power and Freestyle as well as first place in Pairs Speed, Power and Freestyle in the 11-12 age division. Before the meet was completed, Paul had developed his own fan club from many of the members of Illinois teams, who were also present for the competition. Their cheering, along with his own teammates, took him to new heights in jumping rope. Paul plans to continue to work hard in the coming months and prepare for his first Junior Olympics in Knoxville, Tenn. Good luck Paul! Novice A Drs Hager/Kniaziew The game a week ago Friday showcased two unbeaten teams in the playoffs as Essex hosted the Belle River Rink Rats. Essex came on strong in the first, but a little too strong as Belle River was able to convert 11 seconds into an early powerplay. At 5:31 Jake Watters showed great work down low and banked one in off the back of the goalie's left pad to tie the game at a goal a piece. At the 6:13 mark of the second, Luke Mahon outskated the Belle River offense and threaded a nice pass to Jake Maisonneuve. Jake carried the puck down the right wing and beat the Belle River netminder on the far side for the go ahead goal, 2-1. At 7:32 of the third Dylan Dent let a backhander go at the Belle River net. Jared Fuerth took the rebound around the goalkeeper and found the mesh to stretch the lead, 3-1. Belle River came right back at 6:58 to again pull within one, 3-2. Late in the third, Essex exhibited great passing and setups in front of the opposing goal but it was Belle River who scored at 3:41, and on the powerplay at 2:31, to skate off with the 43 victory. Break bench' to Riverside. As in the previous game, the Ravens found themselves down early with the Rangers scoring with only six seconds remaining in the first. At 6:33 of the second, Jake W. put the Ravens on the board with assists going to Grant Quinlan and Brady Rickeard. At 4:41 Jared strung a pass out front of the Ranger goal where Carly Davison tipped the pass to Dylan who found the back of the net and put the Ravens up 2-1. Late in the second, the Rangers tied the game 2-2 on a penalty shot. The Ravens were unable to convert on three powerplays early in the third and at 4:41 the Ranger's no. 6 completed his hatrick and scored the winning goal, 3-2. In an exciting finish the Ravens were entering the Riverside zone but due to a curfew were stopped short with 38 seconds left on the clock. The week of March Break brought only one game for the Essex Ravens Novice team. We played Harrow Rams in a return match on Friday, March 15. With the first match ending in a tie it was time for the Ravens to show their power on home ice and they did so with a slightly smaller lineup than usual.
