Wednesday, February 14, 2007 · Page 20 Midget Major CAW Club 200 On Monday, Feb. 5 we made the trip to St. Thomas Brad Quinlan where opened the game with a goal but unfortunately 30 seconds later St. Thomas tied it up. Later in the first period Brad made the pass to Tyler Campbell who put us ahead by one. In the second period Dan Bacon scored with the help of Spencer Woltz and Tyler Montcalm got one by the St. Thomas goalie in the third period. St. Thomas came back hard and scored another one but Dan Bacon sealed the 5-2 win with help from Mike Ouellette. Back at home on Wednesday night the boys learned that Monday night's game was protested by St. Thomas after an error on the game sheet. They won the protest which put our coach out for three games and gave St. Thomas Monday's win and put the Ravens down by two games in the series. This put a spark in our boys who were determined to win more than ever which is exactly what they did. Due to the amazing goaltending by Chris Zelko and goals from Brad Quinlan, Spencer Woltz, Nick Fornier and Kyle McCamon and a lot of hard work from the entire team Essex came away with a 5-0 win and we're back on the road to St.Thomas on Friday night. After a long cold bus ride we arrived out front of the St. Thomas arena to find out that we had some major mechanical problems with our bus but that wasn't going to stop our boys from doing what they went there to do. In the first period Spencer and Brad (Chop) worked their magic again to put Essex on the board first. Another goal from Dan Bacon put the Ravens up by two but St. Thomas closed the gap halfway through the second period. A beautiful pass from Nick Diemer to Spencer Woltz made it's way into the net to once again put us ahead by two and get everyone fired up. St. Thomas tried to close in again but an empty goal, with four seconds left in the game, by Brad Quinlan clinched the 4-2 win to bring gave five back on Sunday night. Now don't forget we still have a broken bus and some pretty hungry boys. So after some pizza at the arena we got everyone and all of the hockey equipment onto a school bus for a memorable ride back to Essex. Sunday night, back in our barn, we have to win to move on to the next round. After a lot of hard work and amazing discipline the boys pulled off a 5-2 win. With two goals and two assists for Brad Quinlan and Dan Bacon, Spencer Woltz and Kyle McCamon each walked away with one goal. Way to go boys! Despite some set backs you stuck together as a team and with a lot of hard work and determination you came out on the winning end. Good luck in the next round of playdowns when we get Wes back behind the bench. Novice A Drs Hager/Kniaziew The team continued their playdown schedule this with games weekend against Chatham and Amherstburg. The Maroons visited Essex on Friday night and after being denied on an early powerplay, they would score first at 3:08. The Ravens did a nice job in the second of killing off a Chatham 5 on 3 powerplay and then came back score, as Jake to Maisonneuve took a feed from Brendan Jones to tie the game 1-1. The teams were playing even hockey until the last minute of the second when Chatham scored three quick goals in a one-minute span to stretch their lead 4-1. Chatham went on to win 51. On Saturday night the Ravens were looking to bounce back as they traveled to Amherstburg. Essex struck first in this game as Dylan Dent took the puck end to end and, with some nice moves and at 8:55, put his team up 1-0. Josh Scratch denied the Amherstburg forward on a breakaway midway through the first. Four seconds into a late first period power play, first Jake Watters won the draw deep in the Amherstburg zone getting the puck to Brady Rickeard who extended the lead to 20. The Ravens did a nice job of killing off three power plays in the second and at 3:10 it was Jake M. who found the mesh on a nice backhander to extend the lead to 3-0, with Jake W and Brady getting the assists. Amherstburg was awarded a penalty shot at 6:31 of the third and was successful in converting to finally get on the board 3-1. With one minute left in the game, a scramble in the crease resulted in Amherstburg pulling to within one, 3-2. Adam Amicarelli's netminding was sharp late in the game. Even with the Amherstburg net empty for the last minute, the Ravens were successful in keeping the puck away from their net and had several attempts at the empty netter. Final score 3-2. Essex horses strong at Windsor BY BILL GAY Snoopmattdog, owned by Tony Piroski of Essex, captured a claiming handicap last Sunday at Windsor Raceway. With Belle River having two wins under their belt the Ravens knew they had to work hard and come out strong. The first period ended scoreless showing nice defensive efforts from Danielle Dent, Colton Kitchen, Clay Kraynack, Alec Carter Sherk, Robillard and Matthew Zelko. Shortly into the second period Matthew held strong keeping the puck in the Belle River zone and passed it to Gerard Busko who took the shot on net where Zack Prentice dumped in the bound. The very next shift Aidan Garant passed the puck up to Tyler St. Pierre who rang it off the post giving the Ravens the edge 2-0. Belle River quickly answered back with a goal followed by two more before the end of the second. Starting the third period 3-2 for Belle River Eric Rawlins took the puck into the Rink Rats' zone and scored a short handed goal tying up the game and going into overtime. With only two minutes left in overtime the Rink Rats were able to find the back of our net ending the playdown series for the Ravens. Great efforts and sportsmanship was shown by all the Atom AE players. Can you remember back to the days of filmstrips, clackety projectors and the numbered countdown before the movie starts?
