Hope- fully you havent broken all of your New Years Resolutions, just yet. Now that winter has arrived, I wanted to advise everyone about a potential problem I noted while on patrol in Ac- ton. PLEASE I know its cold out and you are only leaving the car for a couple of minutes to let it warm up, defrost the windows, get a coffee, pick up a news- paper etc, etc Remember that it takes less than 10 sec- onds for someone to hop into your unlocked, running car and drive it away. Weve all read in the papers, seen on TV, or heard on the radio about the tragic con- equences resulting from the use of stolen vehicles. The operators of these vehicles are involved in robberies, break & en- ters, fail-to-remain motor collisions, running red lights and generally dont care about anyone or anything, except getting caught. I know its an inconvenience to clean all the car windows and get into a cold car. Or to lock and unlock the car doors when youre only going to be gone for a couple of minutes. But if you stop and think about the consequences, its a small price to pay. There are specific Town by-laws and Provincial Statues that deal with leaving vehicles running unattended. Acton pa- trol officers have been verbally warning offenders. . Please be aware that officers will be monitoring the situation. If the problem persists offenders will be charged. There were 506 more bears in Rock- wood the night of the Parade of Lights, December 12 at the home of Teressa Gibson, who sponsored a Bears in the Wood contest at her home on 136 Main. P. Baillie and E. Alexander had the clos- est guesses on the number of bears. They were tied with a guess of 487. The result of the contest? - $118.00 raised and two boxes of food for EWAG. Thanks to all care bears who partici- pated and my friends, neighbours and clients for making this a successful ef- fort. Gibson said. To the editor, Re. Welcome Banners in Downtown Rockwood I was both pleased and taken aback to see Coun- cillor Breen applaud the efforts of merchants to im- prove the appearance of downtown Rockwood. It wasnt that long ago that he obtained a great deal of coverage, especially in the mayors paper, castigating many of the very people he now congratulates. Re- member the conspiracy Mr. Breen? Or the negative reaction of council to del- egates from the downtown where was your voice then Mr. Breen? Unfortunately, Mr. Breen did not get his facts straight, either. It was not only the merchants who contributed to this project but a few residents and businesses outside the downtown core. Addition- ally, all the banners were hung by an individual (who prefers to remain anonymous) which also involved a significant amount of time and effort. On a more positive note, Breens comments do of- fer a glimmer of hope for support of future projects. Traffic calming on Main and Alma and better light- ing might be areas for consideration before a se- rious accident mandates them. Thank you. Regards. Teressa Gibson Rockwood, ON A 19-year-old Guelph man was Wellington OPPs Speeder of the Week, caught on Highway 6 doing 163 km/hr in a posted 70 km/hr zone. Sgt. Rick Weiler of the OPPs Traffic Manage- ment Unit was conducting laser enforcement on Hwy 6 near Wellington St. in Guelph when he observed the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta travelling north at a high rate of speed while snow was falling and the road- way was wet. The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph POA Court on February 5 to an- swer the speeding charge. The Acton Aqua Ducks Swim Club always enjoys competing at Georgetown meets, according to assist- ant head coach Julie Matthews. Georgetown is the closest meet we attend, therefore the swimmers get to sleep in a little later than normal and also they get to select the events they want to swim. This means the swimmers get to compete in their off events or the events they normally do not compete in.
