For the past several years, Ernie dealt with the complication of Parkinson?s with great courage and dig- nity. Loving husband of Lucille (Monk) for 47 years. Dearly loved by sons Peter and his wife Lori (Kitchener) Paul and his wife Kim Wagner (Stratford) and Michael and his wife Lenore Dickson (Dundas). Cherished grandfather of Annika, Carly, Malcolm, Owen, Simon, Will and Ruby. He will also be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Geraldine and her husband Au- gust Meachem of London, Rosemond Limebeer of Bramalea, John Chapman of Rockwood , Lyal McCutheon of Cambridge and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear sisters Wilma Chapman and Helen McCutheon and parents Margaret (Near) and Fredrick D. West. Born in 1930 on the family farm in Erin Township, Ernie graduated from Osgoode Hall in 1951 and practised law in Kitchener until 1975. During that period, he was deeply engaged in the service of the Highland Baptist Church and the wider Baptist community. At Highland Baptists, he served as deacon, chairman of the Board of Management and of the Finance Committee and as Sunday School Department Superintendent. He was very active on numerous charitable and civic bodies. For eight years he was Area Director of Ontario Legal Aid Plan. He also provided leadership for the Kitchener Red Cross Society, the K-W YMCA and the Social Planning Council of K-W. His civic contributions included serving on the Waterloo Public School Board, on the Land Division Committee of the Region of Waterloo and for 14 years on the Committee of Adjustment for the City of Waterloo. In 1975, he was appointed a judge of the County and District Courts of Ontario (Brampton/Peel) and in 1985 was named a member of the reorganized District Court. In the same year served he served as President of the Baptists Convention of Ontario and Quebec. In 1988, Ernie was conferred the honorary degree , Doctor of Law, from McMaster University. Ernie?s family received friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South in Waterloo from 2 to 4 on Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral service was held at Highland Baptist Church, 135 Highland Road West Kitchener, on Monday, January 6, 2003 at 11 am. Interment followed at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, donations to Highland Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the Parkinson Society of Canada, Southwestern Ontario Region, and can be arranged through the funeral home 519-745- 8445 or www.edwardrgood.com. Following the committal service at the Parkview Cemetery, friends and relatives were invited to return to Highland Baptist Church for refreshments and a time to visit with the family.
