CARD OF THANKS VANHOORNE Thanks to everyone who came to my birthday open house and for all the phone calls, cards, flowers and gifts. It was very thoughtful of everyone. Liz Vanhoorne _____________________ CARD OF THANKS LEGALNOTICE PERSONALS FARMING DEATH NOTICE IN MEMORIAMS PETS WANTTO BUY 'The Real McCoy' MISCELLANEOUS Most of us have heard the expression "The Real McCoy", but few might realize that it came about as the result of an inventor and innovator born and raised in this area. The life of Elijah McCoy was the topic of discussion at the Nov. 23 meeting of the Harrow Early Immigrant Research Society. Kim Elliott, Deacon of Sandwich First Baptist Church, was the guest speaker. "He was an amazing man," said Elliott, speaking of McCoy, who was born a "free Canadian citizen" on May 2, 1844 in Colchester Township. He was the son of George and Emillia McCoy, former slaves who escaped from Kentucky. "They might have passed right through the doors of my church," said Elliott, noting that the Sandwich church was part of the Underground Railroad, a network of safe havens that aided those escaping slavery in the United States. "That was one of the main points of entry into Canada," he said. Reported to be the third of twelve children, Elijah McCoy was raised on a 160acre farm in Colchester Township, land granted to his father for his loyal service in the Canadian militia at the time of the 1837 Rebellion. As a young man, McCoy traveled to Scotland where he pursued a mechanical engineering apprenticeship in Edinburgh. On his return, he sought work with the Michigan Central Railroad in Ypsilanti, Mich. Even the American industrial north was unaccustomed to an educated black man, and despite his engineering training, McCoy could only obtain the job of locomotive fireman and oilman. McCoy married Ann Elizabeth Stewart in 1868; WANTTO BUY · Wednesday, November 29, 2006 · Page 26 DEATH NOTICE BUSINESS BIRTH OPPOR.BY ANDY COMBER HELPWANTED ANNOUNCEMENTS MISCELLANEOUS McLEAN, Pam In loving memory of a Dear "Godmother", Aunt and Sister-in-law who passed away November 29, 2005. He remarried the next year to Mary Eleanor Delaney and moved to Detroit. Recognizing the problems of lubrication and overheating of steam engines, McCoy developed and patented his first automatic oil lubrication device in 1872. He went on to invent and improve lubricators for both stationary and moving engines, becoming an instructor in the use of new lubricators for the Michigan Central. Railroad and shipping lines adopted the McCoy lubrication devices. Others tried to copy them, but the standard of quality in McCoy's device was such that the term "The Real McCoy" was coined to describe the highest quality product available. McCoy eventually moved to Detroit and established the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company around 1920, manufacturing Children's Aid and socks, children's underwear and toiletries for Hiatus House instead of exchanging gifts. All ladies of the congregation are invited. The nursing home service is on Tues. Dec. 5 at Iler Lodge at 2 p.m. All are welcome. On Sun. Dec. 10 Jeff Gorick will be the guest soloist at the service. It is reported that he patented inventions in France, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, Canada and the United States. Elijah McCoy died in 1929, and is buried in Detroit, Mich. In 1975, the City of Detroit celebrated Elijah McCoy Day with an historic marker at the site of his former home, and named a street Elijah McCoy Drive - in his honour. Publications outlining the Elijah McCoy story are available at the HEIRS library in the Harrow Colchester South Community Centre, at the end of McAffee Street in Harrow. CHECK US OUT!
