Wednesday, October 11, 2006 · Page 12 Homebuilders awarded for community impact BY FREE PRESS STAFF The Greater Windsor Home Builders' Association is being recognized for its involvement in the MRI House in Essex. Over a weekend in July 2005 volunteers from the organization built a home on Fairview Avenue and donated money from the sale of the house to the MRI Field of Dreams campaign. The campaign was developed in Sept. 2004 by the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre to raise money to buy an MRI machine. Community Living Essex County purchased the home and $265,000 generated from the sale was donated to the cancer centre at Windsor Regional Hospital's Metropolitan campus. The GWHBA was honoured Sept. 27 at an Ontario Home Builders' Association conference in Niagara Falls, Ont. and the Local given Association of the Year Award for its impact on the community. Gina Mancini, the president of the GWHBA, said its employees volunteered for the project because of their families' experiences with cancer. " ... A lot of our families have been afflicted by cancer and realize how frustrating it is when the wait is long, due to the over-utilized and long waiting lists for the only MRI machine located at Hotel Dieu Hospital," Mancini said. "There is a great need in this community for a second MRI and the GWHBA took it upon themselves to assist in reaching the Windsor and Essex County Cancer Foundation's request to raise money for this worthwhile cause." MRI project The involved over 400 volunteers from 165 companies in Windsor and Essex County.
