Arena possibilities include using new architects BY SARAH FISHER The steering committee for the Essex arena project is considering the possibility of using a London-based builder and architectural team for the design of the town's new arena. During a special meeting Sept. 25 to review the design options submitted by architects from Rounthwaite, Dick and Hadley, councillors suggested using the same design as the arena in the St. Thomas Community Complex. If St. Thomas' building was going to be a model, councillors wondered if Essex could use the same plans. "I don't think that can happen," Essex Chief Administrative Officer Wayne Miller said Sept. 27. "Architects don't sell their designs; they would require us to hire them." Miller said hiring Norlon Builders London Co. and Spiret Associates, architects based in London, Ont., isn't out of the question. However, using the same design isn't an option, he said. Councillors like the St. Thomas design, but it would require some changes. Members of the steering committee traveled to St. Thomas Sept. 21 and were impressed by the 8,400 square-foot 2,300-seat arena. Parks and Recreation Director Doug Sweet referred to it as a "mini Sherk centre," but said the committee is interested in a scaled-down version for Essex. When the St.ThomasElgin Memorial Arena was built in 2004 the total cost for the twin-pad arena was $11.5 million. The estimated cost to build the same design today would be around $13.3 million, over $158 a square foot, Sweet said. The committee is considering suggesting that RDH research building a version of the St. Thomas-Elgin Memorial Arena. RDH has proposed a 7,900 square foot twin-pad facility with 1,000 seats. The estimated cost today is $12.5 million. The cost to build the arena at the St. Thomas Community Complex included expenses Essex would not have to consider. The land the arena was built on required an environmental clean up, Deputy Mayor Percy Dufour said. Essex may opt for a gravel parking lot, Miller said at the meeting. Sweet raised the option of building a single pad arena. The cost of a new single rink arena with bowl or grandstand seating was estimated at $7.5 million. Sweet said RDH researched the possibility of adding an additional ice pad to that building in 2010 and the cost was around $6.4 million. "Something to think about is the cost also of building a new rink while operating the other arena," Sweet said. The cost of adding an additional rink to the existing arena is estimated at $14.6 million. Late last year, after a two-week closure for structural repairs, Dillon Consulting Ltd. advised the town the building would be structurally sound for approximately five more years. The cost of adding an additional rink to the existing structure would have to include costly structural repairs to the current arena, Sweet said. Miller said using St. Thomas' architects is something the steering committee and council may consider. "That scenario isn't out of the question," Miller said. "We could say we've worked with the architects we have as long as we want to."
