Wednesday, September 27, 2006 · Page 8 Another piece of the puzzle by Ron Bonnett, President Ontario Federation of Agriculture Ontario farmers were recently issued another piece of the income puzzle that we've been trying to complete for many months. Premier Dalton McGuinty, speaking at the 2006 Plowing International Match and Rural Expo near Peterborough, announced $110 million for agriculture along with $75 million for infrastructure in rural Ontario. These were both welcome additions to the funding puzzle we've been designing for our farmers and our rural communities. The additional investment adds to the federal contributions to address a serious ESTATE AUCTION SALE A PUBLIC AUCTION FOR AN ESTATE (Windsor) PLUS OTHERS WILL BE HELD AT 567 QUEEN ST. (Walker Rd.) This correction certainly works to address income support issues for the livestock sectors. But as a margin-based program, even a repaired CAIS does not work well for grain and oilseed farmers. We must now turn our attention again to the federal government for the next critical piece of the funding puzzle. Our federal politicians have acknowledged the importance of the domestic agriculture sector to the Canadian economy, and have made funding commitments, but we're still in desperate need of long-term agricultural policy. Working with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the OFA is launching a campaign to remind the federal government of what farmers need to succeed in the future. Part of the campaign involves farmers signing and sending post cards to Prime Minister Harper, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Strahl, and their MPs. The clear message on the post cards describes the farm income crisis and how it is destroying farm families across the country, and presents solutions solutions that aren't astoundingly new. We're telling the politicians that Canadian agriculture needs a new and improved CAIS program, and a NISA-like program that separates disaster from stabilization programming. Ontario farm organizations have worked hard to develop the programs needed to protect the future of farm incomes. Large subsidies being paid to our international competitors have sucked the profitability out of our farming operations, and the programs we need will respond to such situations and provide a respectable income to our farm families. The post card describes a `predictable and bankable program' for farmers. This is essential if farmers are going to be able to plan for the future and we believe our farmers have proven over the decades they have the skills and resources to yield a strong future in agriculture, given a level playing field. Another key ingredient to what we want the federal government to incorporate into a new agricultural policy is flexibility the flexibility needed to allow provinces to recognize and respond to regional difference that exist across Canada. Premier McGuinty indi- cated during his plowing match announcement that his government wants to be part of the partnership that includes farmers and the federal government. OFA and the farmers of Ontario are anxious to secure an even greater role for agriculture in the future of the province's economy. Hearing our premier state his willingness to play a meaningful role in such a partnership is the leadership needed for the development of strong agricultural policy. We encourage all Ontario farmers to get copies of the `Solutions from the farm gate' post card from OFA's staff of Member Service Representatives, or on website OFA's www.ofa.on.ca sign and mail them immediately no postage necessary.
