Wednesday, September 27, 2006 · Page 26 Bantam AE Facca Construction Our Bantam AE team opened the season with a home series battling the Belle River Rink Rats. In Belle River on Sept. 16, the boys came out with intensity, and behind the fine goaltending of Ryan Dickson, the first period ended with the Rink Rats holding onto a slim 2 to 1 lead. With the implementation of the new stick and interference rules, the 13 penalties the Ravens would endure in this game proved to take its toll, and Belle River took advantage of this the rest of the game to finish with an 8 to 1 victory for the home team. The lone Essex goal was scored by Andrew Wellwood, with assists going to Awstin Petit and Skylar Janisse. Sept. 24's rematch in Essex would play out very similar to the previous game. With Alex Rawlins in goal for Essex, the boys played to a hard-fought scoreless tie after one period. Once again, penalties would hurt this momentum and Belle River would capitalize on their advantages and walk away with another 8 to 1 victory. The Essex goal scorer in this game was Janisse, with assists going to Matt McGuire and Alex Merryfield. On Sept. 23, the Ravens hosted the Southpoint Capitals at Essex Memorial Arena. Behind the play of Ryan Dickson in goal and Luke McCarthy and Alex Merryfield on defence, the Ravens would have another fine first period, leading into the second with a scoreless tie. But the second period would prove to be their downfall with Southpoint scoring three unanswered goals. The first was a shorthanded goal at 9:44. Then, back to back goals at 1:21 and 1:10 left in the period put the Capitals up 3 to 0. In the third period, the Ravens showed that they planned on staying in the game, with fine forechecking by Matt McGuire and hardhitting by Petit and Wellwood. With 1:19 remaining, the Ravens had a two-man advantage, with the coaches deciding to pull the goalie, the pressure was on Southpoint. After some fine passing and patience, the Ravens were able to end the visiting goaltender's shutout. With one minute remaining, Petit lifted a rebound over the sprawled Southpoint netminder. Wellwood and McGuire drew the assists. The pressure continued until the buzzer sounded, ending the game with a 3 to 1 win for Southpoint. Rec Centre manager to judge lifesaving competition in England BY SARAH FISHER Cynthia Cakebread, the community recreation manager for the Essex Recreation Complex, is preparing to receive some high profile job training. Cakebread, 35, was selected as a judge for the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth Conference and Lifesaving Championships in Bath, England Sept. 24-29. The RLS is the governing body for lifesaving standards across Canada. Cakebread has been a competitor and was selected as a judge in May after gaining some international judging experience in Italy in 2004 and Australia in 2006. The event in England includes a competition and conference for judges and sport professionals. Canada is sending 16 competitors, eight people for the official Canadian team and eight more swimmers for the development team. The development team participates to gain skill and experience. Many of those swimmers are hoping to make the Canadian team in the future. Cynthia Cakebread, the town's community recreation manager, sits with a swimming mannequin at the Essex Recreation Centre. Cakebread is among the Canadian judges involved in the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth Conference and Lifesaving Championships in Bath, England Sept. 24-29. "All the events at the competition are very similar to a world class swim meet, with a life saving spin to the events," Cakebread said in her office Sept. 20. "... One of the events is the simulated emergency response. Many of the events we deal with are physical events incorporated into lifesaving skills." Cakebread said the other events involve a test of lifesaving skills such as swimming a certain distance, and picking up or dragging a mannequin in the water. The events are timed, but she said how the skills are performed is also important. "I'm thrilled," Cakebread said about judging another international competition. "It's participating with world class athletes and meeting with people from all over the world. At one point I'm looking across the deck and there are 12-15 delegates from across the world. ... and they love the Canadians." Doug Sweet, the director of parks and recreation, is supportive of Cakebread's trip. Sweet notified town council about the recreation manager's selection as a judge. "I think honestly that this is a prestigious award for her," Sweet said. "It shows the knowledge that she has in her field and the respect that people have for her. I brought this to council because she's been receiving awards all along and hasn't really been recognized for them." Canada is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2009 and the conference in Bath will give the judges and administrators an opportunity to promote the event. Cakebread will also help Canadian representatives host a reception for Prince Michael of Kent, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II during the trip. Need Cash Before Payday?
