The 16to 21-year-old winner of this talent and public speaking contest wins the title of Miss FFAO, while the winner of the male competition wins the title of Fire Safety Youth Representative. A steak barbecue dinner is being held at Essex Arena Saturday night from 5:30 to 8:30. Tickets are $20 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 519-776-5369. The firefighters memorial parade will start Sunday morning at 9:30. Each of the firefighters at the convention will walk in dress uniform from the campground area to the cenotaph beside the Essex municipal building. The parade is part of each FFAO convention and commemorates all of the firefighters in the organization who have died within the last year. Rev. Steve Berryman, the FFAO chaplain, will lead the service. The public is also welcome to a kids' fun day at the convention centre tent located behind the old Holy Name School from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the activities that include face painting, a fire truck bounce house, tours through the fire prevention safety trailer, an appearance by Trixie the Clown, as well as cotton candy and snow cones. There is no admission charge to the kids' fun day, although a donation is appreciated. All money raised will be donated to Camp Bucko, a summer camp for burn victims ages seven to 17 in Minden, Ont. This is the first year for the kids' fun day, said Capt. Tom Bonneau. A kids' fun day is planned for Saturday for FFAO families only. Fireworks will end the day Sunday at dusk in the field behind the arena near the baseball diamond. The convention closes Monday, Aug. 7 with a parade from the corner of Maidstone Avenue and Talbot Street North back to the campgrounds. This parade is also a part of each Capt. Some firefighters have already set up camp at the temporary campgrounds along the Arner Town Line. Around 400 firefighters are expected to arrive in Essex by Friday for the Ontario Firefighter's Association of Ontario convention. FFAO convention and will include all of the Essex Fire and Rescue Service vehicles, as well as fire trucks and vehicles from other volunteer departments. "A lot of departments will be bringing their trucks here too, it's part of every conference," said Bonneau. Closing ceremonies will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at the convention centre tent following the parade. Lakeshore receives fitness grant for programs geared to seniors The Town of Lakeshore is receiving a Communities in Action Fund grant for $11,600 from the provincial government to increase physical activity and sport participation rates in the town of Lakeshore, Essex MPP Bruce Crozier announced July 26 on behalf of Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson. The grant will help to fund four new physical activity programs geared to seniors ages 50 and up to be established in the rural areas where there are no programs currently running. The programs are: · Fitness Fusion, ages 50 and up ­ Exercises to improve ability and endurance such as yoga, Pilates, strength training and meditation · Tai Chi, ages 50 and up · Senior Walking Club, ages 50 and up · Senior Hockey Club, ages 55 and up Activities will begin in August of this year once a programmer is hired to implement activities. "Lakeshore's Community and Development Services is pleased to have been awarded CIAF funds in order to address the needs identified in a recent study for more recreation programming for older Pursuant to Part XII of the Municipal Act 2001, the Town of Amherstburg proposes to pass a by-law, to establish the rates to be charged for wastewater collection and treatment. Ontario Regulation 244/02, Section 12 requires that the Town hold at least one public meeting to inform the public of the proposed rates and the basis for these rates. The funding will contribute towards the program instructors' costs, room rentals, purchase of pedometers, as well as a portion of the part-time coordinator's salary. "This grant will create more opportunities for the town of Lakeshore to get active," said Crozier. "Providing enhanced opportunities for physical activity and community sport and recreation will remove barriers that have prevented people in our community from participating in sport and recreation programs and help us to become healthier." Now in its third year, the Communities in Action Fund is a $5 million program that supports ACTIVE2010, Ontario's strategy to increase physical activity and sport participation across the province, and supports the work of Ontario's Action Plan for Healthy Eating and Active Living. The Lakeshore grant is a portion of this fund.
