Essex Yellow Jacket Rookie Baseball Last weekend the Jackets hosted a Rookie baseball tournament here at home. The team started the tournament against a strong Amherstburg team. The top of the batting order for Essex Alec Robillard, Tyler St. Pierre, Colin Lauzon and Brode Masse came out hitting, scoring three runs in the first inning. But Amherstburg wouldn't be denied and scored two runs of their own on their first at bat. Great plays by pitcher Adam Amicarelli wouldn't allow them any more runs. With the Jackets' bats still working and the defense shutting down Amherstburg, the team wouldn't allow any more runs until the fourth inning. Up by three runs in the seventh, Amherstburg wouldn't back down and started to get their bats on track, scoring four runs and beating the Jackets by one run. Final score: 9 - 8. The second game of the tournament found the team facing Tilbury. Again, Essex came out hitting, scoring six runs in the first three innings, but Tilbury scored six runs of their own. With the score tied after four innings, the team knew what they had to do. The bats came alive again and the Jackets went up by eight runs, this time with great hits by Anthony Iacobini, Jake Watters, Adam Amicarelli, Brendan Jones, Alex Smith, Sydney O'Doherty and Logan McMurren. The infield of Jake, Colin, Tyler, Adam and Brode made some great plays to deny Tilbury's bats and leave them scoreless in the last four innings. Final score: Essex 14, Tilbury 6. The third game saw Essex facing Harrow. With their confidence up and the whole team working together, the Jackets won the game with a final score of 12 - 4. The Jackets found themselves facing Amherstburg in the championship game. Amherstburg came out strong scoring five runs the first inning. The Jackets' bats struggled but their defense came alive with two great pop fly catches by the backcatcher, Logan, to keep Amherstburg scoreless in the second inning. Finally the Jackets bats started to work with base hits by Kane Gagnon and Nash Prieur to start the team's seven run scoring streak. Great defense in the outfield by Nash to throw out two runners at second Amherstburg wouldn't be base. denied , however, scoring most of their runs in the last innings and beating the Jackets 14 - 8 to win the tournament. Great job by all the players. Essex also played three regular season games during the week beating Walkerville, Tilbury and losing to Tecumseh Major. THINKIN' HOCKEY? We have what you want! The boys were hitting well with a triple from Jeremy Orton. Josh Scratch, Zack Diemer, Austin Scratch and Jamie Bonneau all had multiple singles. Defensively we shut them done with great plays coming from Jeremy Orton, Ben Curtis and Brady Rickeard. Our next game was against Riverside Minor and again our bats were alive and the boys were hungry. It was our third win in a row with a final score of 20-7. Aiden Garant pounded out a couple of doubles. Colton Vriesacker also hit a beautiful double. Jamie Bonneau was ripping the ball up the middle and Eryk Wagner was on fire going 2 for 3. The big story of this game was Bryce Diemer who was 3 for 3, hitting three triples in a row. These were some of the best hits all year! Conner Demars did a nice job over at first base with Aiden Garant making a great catch in the outfield. Bryce also made a great tag at home for the third out from a hard throw from Jeremy Orton. Our third game was against a tough Harrow team and the coaches were hoping for four in a row but the boys fell short in the late innings and we lost 23-13. Great hitting came from Jeremy Orton and Bryce Diemer with homeruns. Austin Scratch and Jamie Bonneau were also solid with the bats. Eryk Wagner had a great catch in left field for a third out.
